A jockey has copped a three-month ban for abusing a steward at a meeting in Victoria’s far west on Boxing Day.

Stewards charged jockey Kate Walters with improper or insulting behaviour towards the steward at Nhill.

Walters was questioned on the day of the meeting along with Racing Victoria staff and other parties before the matter was adjourned until Thursday.

Walters pleaded not guilty to abusing the steward before giving further evidence at the reconvened inquiry.

Trainer Kane Post also gave evidence on Walters’s behalf.

Stewards subsequently found Walters guilty of the charge.

Stewards took into account the nature of the comments made towards what News Corp understands was a female steward, Walters’ plea, personal circumstances and prior record in relation to similar offences.

Walters was suspended until April 4.

Walters has the option of appealing the penalty at the Victorian Racing Tribunal.
