Jockey Ethan Brown has the best seats in the house at Flemington, riding Berkshire Breeze – the shortest-priced thoroughbred in Australia on Saturday – and untapped sprinting filly Pharari.

Berkshire Breeze, a potential Caulfield Cup candidate, is the $1.40 favourite with TAB for the Banjo Paterson Series Final (2600m) after back-to-back wins by a combined 7.8 lengths.

Brown played statue last start Flemington as the Ciaron Maher-trained stayer walloped inferior opposition by 4.8 lengths.

“It’s what you get up in the early mornings for in the cold weather, it makes it all worthwhile,” Brown said.

“It’s an amazing feeling, every race you strive for that … a horse that travels up for you and let’s down, it’s a great feeling and even better when it’s in town.”

The same could happen Saturday with a small field unlikely to trouble Berkshire Breeze.

“He’s had a gap between runs, a nice trial in between, his work on Tuesday was quite good,” Brown said.

“I think it’s pretty simple, ride him where he’s travelling and hopefully he puts his best foot forward and if he does that I’m sure he wins.

“He’s certainly got gears, so I hope he has them come Saturday.”

Brown endorsed potential spring aspirations for Berkshire Breeze, a $26 chance with TAB in pre-nominations Caulfield Cup markets.

“He’s only lightly raced so has got a lot of improvement in him and if he continues to take that improvement, which Ciaron’s horses generally do, he could level up to that grade.

“He’s pretty electric for a stayer, I just like the way he jumps and travels; when you ask for him he really lets go.

“I haven’t come across too many stayers like that, the way he drops his head and has the ability to really quicken up … his biggest asset is his turn of foot at the end of his race.”

Brown has five rides at Flemington including Steel Run, a $3.30 favourite in the Mahogany Challenge Final (2500m) and Pharari in the Listed Creswick Sprint Series Final (1200m).

Pharari, also trained by Maher, has burst onto the scene with back-to-back wins at Cranbourne and Ballarat by a combined 13.8 lengths.

“Hasn’t she really improved this preparation? Her form last prep wasn’t that bad, she ran into a couple potential stakes fillies in maidens, she’s gone to another level,” Brown said.

“She gives me the feel of a very nice horse. It’s a step up in grade but she’s put the writing on the wall her last two starts and no reason why she can’t measure up.

“I don’t think she has a ceiling just yet, she’s pretty exciting, we’ll let her tell us … she gives me the feeling of a stakes-class horse.”
