Japanese star Prognosis has been confirmed for the Cox Plate on October 26 at The Valley.

Prognosis, a three time Group 2 winner, has placed at the highest level on multiple occasions behind Equinox, the world’s best racehorse last year, and reigning Cox Plate champion Romantic Warrior.

The six-year-old has won seven of 15 starts and earned $6.1 million in prizemoney.

Top jockey Damian Lane would be the frontrunner to partner Prognosis in the Cox Plate.

Lane won the 2019 Cox Plate on Japanese raider Lys Gracieux.

The reigning Melbourne premiership jockey has ridden in Japan successfully in recent seasons, including multiple feature winners.

Moonee Valley Racing Club head of racing Charlotte Mills welcomed the confirmation.

“Prognosis has been a key target for us since the beginning of our International Recruitment Strategy,” Mills said.

“With a rating of 119, he is one of Japan’s top-rated horses and one of the best middle-distance horses in the world.

“We are very excited to have Japanese participation in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate for the first time since Lys Gracieux’s historic win in 2019, and we are sure Prognosis will make his presence felt on the day.”
