Golden Rose winner Broadsiding ready for Caulfield Guineas on way to Cox Plate

Golden Rose winner Broadsiding continues to please trainer James Cummings ahead of his Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate missions.

Melbourne Saturday Review – Turnbull Stakes

Odds-on favourite Broadsiding is primed for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on Saturday.

The superstar colt and Godolphin’s Cox Plate top seed defied stablemate Traffic Warden first-up in the Group 1 Golden Rose to protect a perfect record – three from three – in elite company.

James Cummings-trained Broadsiding has won five of eight starts, and triumphed in the Champagne Stakes and JJ Atkins Stakes in a brilliant two-year-old campaign.

The Too Darn Hot colt is likely to gallop the Melbourne way – counter clockwise – on Tuesday at Godolphin’s private training facility, Osborne Park, at Agnes Banks, northwest of Sydney.

Broadsiding made his debut in Victoria in February at Ballarat in what turned out to be a hot maiden plate won by Immortal Star, who has stakes-placed since, and Evaporate, now a Group 2 winner.

Melbourne representative Nacim Dilmi, excited to welcome the colt back to Flemington, said Broadsiding has continued to please Cummings.

“He’s had a couple gallops since (Golden Rose) and listening to the feedback this (Saturday) morning from James he was pretty happy with the horse,” Dilmi said.

“It was always going to be either first-up (in the) Golden Rose or second-up, James was happy to go there first-up then Caulfield Guineas into the Cox Plate, third-up, no weight on his back.”

Broadsiding is $1.70 favourite in the all-in Ladbrokes market for the Caulfield Guineas.

Champion jockey James McDonald will ride Broadsiding on Saturday.

No decision has been made yet on a Cox Plate pilot, with champion Jamie Kah and rising star Sydney hoop Zac Lloyd in the frame to ride at the 49.5kg featherweight.

Revealed: Flemington bid for November Cox Plate

Cummings has won two of the past three Caulfield Guineas with Anamoe (2021) and Golden Mile (2022).

Champion Anamoe, touched off in the 2021 Cox Plate as a three-year-old, denied in somewhat controversial circumstances by Irish raider State Of Rest, avenged the defeat 12 months later.

Broadsiding, a Group 1 winner at two and three, is on a similar trajectory.

“You don’t think you’re going to get a horse as good as Anamoe and Broadsiding, of course, isn’t Anamoe but to get a good one like that, very quickly, right behind him (is great),” Dilmi said.

“Hopefully, he’s as good as Anamoe.”

Broadsiding displayed true class and toughness in the Golden Rose where he defeated race-fit opposition in Traffic Warden, Mayfair and Storm Boy.

Mayfair is set to contest the Caulfield Guineas on Saturday, with Traffic Warden and Storm Boy to stay in Sydney.

“To do what he did first-up against I wouldn’t say 100 per cent fit horses, but Traffic Warden already had a run and Storm Boy a couple, prior to that,” Dilmi said.

“It’s good to see him hit the line as strong as he did and listening to J-Mac after the race when he saw the horse peaking at the 100m he really dug in.

“It’s a really good indication he’ll improve from that, it’s a good sign.”
