Gavin Bedggood to wait for conditions before deciding on Mornington Glory’s Bletchingly Stakes bid

Relying on Melbourne’s weather to determine plans is always difficult but trainer Gavin Bedggood will use it to decide whether Mornington Glory runs in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes.

Melbourne’s notorious weather holds the key to a possible rematch in Saturday’s Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield.

Oakleigh Plate placegetter Mornington Glory must make up 9½ lengths on last-start Monash Stakes conqueror Recommendation after the pair clashed in Soft 7 conditions on July 13.

Mornington Glory’s trainer Gavin Bedggood said a return bout would not happen if the track was in a similar condition on Saturday.

“It will depend on how much rain we get whether he runs or not,” Beggood said.

“We definitely don’t want it as wet as it was for his first-up run.

“He’s improved off that run but if the track was worse than a (soft) five, I will probably consider whether or not I run him.

“There’s a bit (of rain) forecast on Thursday, Friday and Saturday so we’ll just reassess things closer to the day.”

The Cranbourne-based Bedggood said Mornington Glory had improved since his first-up run but he was happy to wait for another day if the son of Shalaa bypassed the Bletchingly Stakes.

“I still thought he was OK through the line first-up but he will be better for the run,” Bedggood said.

“We’ll probably head back to Moonee Valley for his next couple of runs after this and go from there but it will all be form-dependent.

“If he didn’t run Saturday it would be four weeks between runs but he’ll only run if the track is a (soft) five or better.”

Benedetta will get one shot at Everest slot

While Mornington Glory has placed at Group 1 level, Bedggood said the rising six-year-old would race below the top echelon of sprint events in the spring.

“We’ll just poke around the fringes,” Bedggood said.

“We can go to Moirs and Manikatos but we’re probably better off going to the second-tier races like the Schillaci and the Carlyon (Stakes) and those types of races.”

Mornington Glory is a $9.50 in TAB’s early Bletchingly Stakes betting market in which Recommendation is a hot $1.50 favourite.

Recommendation’s Ciaron Maher-trained stablemate Mrs Chrissie is the $5 second favourite after her third placing in the Sir John Monash Stakes.

Bedggood has booked jockey Ben Melham to ride Mornington Glory on Saturday.

Blake Shinn, who won last year’s Bletchingly Stakes aboard Godolphin sprinter Ingratiating, will again ride Recommendation in the $200,000 feature.
