Herald Sun form analyst Chris Vernuccio gives his four-play $200 betting strategy and detailed quaddie selections for Caulfield on Saturday.

FOUR-PLAY

RACE 2 CAULFIELD

$50 win MAWALLOCK at $1.80

The lightly-raced Lindsey Smith mare is first-up and can get punters off to a great start. Mawallock has won four of her five career starts and is unbeaten in two runs at 1100m. She had a light campaign last spring but won both starts with ease in BM70 grade by four and two lengths and should take the next step here.

RACE 7 MORPHETTVILLE

$50 win THE MAP at $2.40

The Map returns from a short break after she went agonisingly close to winning the Adelaide Cup in March and should be primed for a big run after two trials. The backmarker will possibly need to loop the field from barrier one but she is good enough to get the job done.

RACE 9 CAULFIELD

$50 win BERKELEY SQUARE at $2.90

Berkeley Square backs up after breaking through for his first victory in 19 months at the track and distance. He meets a couple of rivals again from the Easter Cup where he finished an unlucky fifth, beaten just 1½ lengths. If he can avoid trouble from barrier one, he can win again after last week’s confidence booster.

RACE 10 CAULFIELD

$50 win CHORLTON LANE at $3.90

Chorlton Lane made a winning return last month at Bendigo with a big run from second last in the field. He stays at the 1400m where is has never missed a place in seven starts, winning three of them, and is well placed again in a Benchmark 84. The form from his first-up win has also stacked up with runner-up Extratwo saluting last Saturday.

QUADZILLA

LEG 1 – RACE 7

HERE TO SHOCK (3) is coming off a strong win the Group 3 Victoria Handicap a month ago and has had a tickover trial. He’s been hit or miss at the mile, but some of those runs have been against Group 1 company. EL SOLEADO (5) keeps raising the bar and deserved his victory in the Golden Mile at Bendigo. MAKRAM (4) settled too far back in the Golden Mile and could be a blowout chance, while CARINI (7) had excuses in the race. MUNHAMEK (2) didn’t get many favours in the Doncaster Prelude last start, and will find this race a lot easier after racing against the likes of Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni this prep.

FIRST LEG: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7

LEG 2 – RACE 8

AZTEC STATE (2) should be close to peak fitness third-up stepping up to 2000m after a close second at 1600m. GATES (1) was much better last time out at Mornington after a tough run at The Valley the start prior in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes. SABAN (9) is still a maiden but was a close fourth in a Listed race in Adelaide over 1800m. STEEL RUN (7) upset an odds-on favourite on debut and has scope for further improvement. ETARA (3) has won three of her past four and is bred to run out the trip.

SECOND LEG: 1, 2, 3, 7, 9

LEG 3 – RACE 9

The three runners from the Easter Cup have the strongest form and should fight out the finish. BERKELEY SQUARE (1) has had a run since, winning at Caulfield last Saturday. ABERFELDIE BOY (6) hit the line strongly in the Easter Cup and should be ready third-up. He was unwanted in betting that day but showed the trip isn’t beyond him. SHAIYHAR (7) is also a danger but he looks better suited at a bigger track like Flemington.

THIRD LEG: 1, 6, 7

LEG 4 – RACE 10

CHORLTON LANE (2) will be conceding the leaders a big start but he’s been remarkably consistent, being unplaced just once in nine starts and he excels at the distance. RHEINBERG (6) has had a jumpout after pulling up with a slow recovery when a beaten favourite at Flemington last start, which was won by HE’S OUR BONNEVAL (3). FORTUNATE KISS (9) finished third in the same race after a wide run on the speed.

FOURTH LEG: 2, 3, 6, 9

Cost $100 for 33.33%
