Herald Sun form analyst Gilbert Gardiner gives his four-play $200 betting strategy and detailed quaddie selections for the All-Star Mile meeting at Caulfield on Saturday.

FOUR-PLAY

RACE 5: LISTED ANNIVERSARY VASE (1600m)

$50 win NUGGET (1) $3.20

A bit plain first-up in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes but the race was not run to suit, with fast early and mid-race sectionals, and exposed Nugget’s condition. The multiple Group 1-placed galloper did enough late and should only take benefit from the run. A big drop in grade here, having competed in top class company six of the past eight starts. Wary of tough KEATS (2) bowling along in front but Nugget should be able to finish over the top.

RACE 7: OPEN FILLIES AND MARES (1200m)

$25 each-way LADY JONES (6)

Could find a couple of these too sharp but watch for Lady Jones late in the piece. A model of consistency, won three of 13 and placed on another five occasions. Placed third first-up last campaign at Caulfield over 1400m and won second-up. Fourth in Group 3 last December, less than half a length behind the in-form Revolutionary Miss. Lady Jones finished second in a recent trail at The Heath. Favourite PEACE TREATY (11) the obvious danger along with stakes-winning WA mare MY BELLA MAE (2).

RACE 8: ALL-STAR MILE (1600m)

$50 boxed trifecta MR BRIGHTSIDE (1), CASCADIAN (2), DOM TO SHOOT (5), DESERT LIGHTNING (8) and PRIDE OF JENNI (12) for 83 per cent flexi dividend

Not going to win a fortune as realistically it looks a race in two between MR BRIGHTSIDE (1) and PRIDE OF JENNI (12) but don’t sleep on CASCADIAN (2) and DOM TO SHOOT (5) to run into the money. A hot early speed, with multiple contenders vying for the front, should help the back markers pick up a few in the straight. New Zealand raider DESERT LIGHTNING (8) also not without a chance of filling a hole either. The shortest way home – 1, 2 and 12 – should return between $71 and $151.

RACE 10: LISTED BEL ESPRIT STAKES (1200m)

$25 each-way MAHARBA (11) at $10/$2.90

Won and been runner-up previously second-up and weighted to be competitive again. The three-year-old Pride Of Dubai finished fourth first-up in the Group 3 Zedative Stakes and should only be better for the run. Defeated Brave Mead second-up last campaign and the preparation before was second behind subsequent Golden Slipper winner Shinzo. Should be in the finish again somewhere.

QUADZILLA

LEG 1 – RACE 7

PEACE TREATY (11) on top in the market but no certainty for mine, fresh and well up in grade. Has speed and talent to burn a couple of the others boast stakes credentials. MY BELLA MAE (2) is a proven Listed performer in WA and should be hard to hold out. LADY JONES (6) not without a chance of finishing over the top of likely leader Peace Treaty. Better over further but impressed in a recent trial around The Heath, inside track at Caulfield.

1ST LEG 2, 6, 11

LEG 2 – RACE 8

MR BRIGHTSIDE (1) one out? Tempting isn’t it, but nothing but respect for multiple Group 1 winner PRIDE OF JENNI. The tough on-pace mare conquered Mr Brightside in the Champions Mile last spring and it took a mighty run from the champion to nail her first-up in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes. CASCADIAN (2) must be included, runner-up in the All-Star Mile last year and while Caulfield is not exactly his preferred surface the Doncaster and Australian Cup winner has drawn perfectly.

2ND LEG 1, 2, 12

LEG 3 – RACE 9

SIR ATLAS (1) is back in town after winning the Terang Country Mile Series qualifier. Drawn low and comeback jockey Beau Mertens has won three of four starts on the lightly-raced five-year-old gelding. DASHING DUCHESS (7) has won three of her past four starts and drawn inside the favourite. Include UNSEEN RULER (6) despite a bad barrier. SAINT LAZARE (9) is well up in class but racing consistently. SAILORS BOOK (13) a knockout chance from the low draw.

3RD LEG 1, 6, 7, 9, 13

LEG 4 – RACE 8

REY MAGNERIO (9) not beaten far in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate last start. Deep in prep but must be respected on recent form. MAHARBA (11) a genuine winning chance second-up and drawn to be prominent in the run. UMGAWA (7) doesn’t win out of turn, four of 31 starts, but capable of a big run. Has saluted second-up previously and Blake Shinn has stuck with the five-year-old gelding. Include BRUDENELL (3).

4TH LEG 3, 7, 9, 11
