Busuttin forgets Memsie Stakes in favour of Feehan Stakes for dual Group 2 winner Forgot You

Forgot You’s eye-catching return to racing in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes has convinced trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young to have a crack at a Cox Plate qualifier instead of Saturday’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes.

Comeback galloper Forgot You could find himself in a Cox Plate but it won’t be via Saturday’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

Forgot You made a superb return to racing from a long-term leg injury when running on well from last in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes, which was his first run in 16 months.

Co-trainer Trent Busuttin said the strong tempo of the Lawrence Stakes was perfect for Forgot You early in his preparation.

“He’d always come back well,” Busuttin, who trains Forgot You in partnership with Natalie Young, said.

“We knew he’d been off the scene for a long time but he trialled up well and as long as he stays sound, he’s a legitimate Group horse.

“It always looked like they were going to go hard and they did so it was good for him.”

Lawrence Stakes winner Mr Brightside will progress to Saturday’s $750,000 Memsie Stakes, which will be Victoria’s first Group 1 of the new season.

However, Busuttin and Young have decided to wait a week to run Forgot You back on his favourite surface at The Valley.

Forgot You won the Group 2 Stutt Stakes and the Moonee Valley Vase as a spring three-year-old at the unique circuit.

Busuttin said another Group 2 race, the Feehan Stakes, was the perfect assignment for the now five-year-old.

The Feehan Stakes offers a Cox Plate ballot exemption to the winner but Busuttin said connections had many options for the son of Savabeel in the spring.

“There’s so many races for him but he’s unbeaten at The Valley,” Busuttin said.

“He’ll have three weeks between runs after a first-up run like he had was ideal and he’s never going to figure in the finish of a Memsie (Stakes).

“Over the mile, he can finish a bit closer to them and we’ll work it out from there I guess.

“All options are open.”

Busuttin and Young have entered six horses for Saturday’s Caulfield meeting, including Uncle Bryn in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes along with Suizuro and Muramasa in the Benchmark 100 Handicap (1400m).
