Star jockey Jamie Kah landed her second Group 1 win in a week in the Australian Guineas but there were several runners to follow out of Saturday’s Flemington meeting.

We return to Flemington on Saturday for the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap, headlined by superstar Kiwi mare, Imperatriz.

FIVE TO FOLLOW

WALTZ ON BY: Waltz On By has never won first-up but she looks in for a winning campaign following her excellent fresh effort behind the in-form Sans Doute. Waltz On By ended up at the rear of a five-horse field but ran on solidly to be beaten less than a length. The four-year-old mare is a second-up winner and races well over the 1400m trip.

MORAL FORCE: Moral Force stepped out for his first run for seven weeks in a Benchmark 78 contest down the Flemington straight and did a good job to finish less than a length from the winner. He’s a lightly-raced six-year-old that is equally at home on soft or dry ground. Trainer Lindsey Smith should find plenty of suitable races for such a consistent type in the coming weeks.

INHIBITIONS: The Godolphin filly resumed with an excellent effort behind the all-the-way winner Diamond Decorator over 1100m. She carried 58kg but found herself facing the breeze but she closed off well to be narrowly beaten despite missing a placing. She’s unbeaten second-up and was competitive in Group races during the spring. No reason she can’t win soon.

FISTSOFFURY: Fistsoffury bumped into the smart Another Wil at Flemington but he performed strongly second-up despite being outclassed by the winner. Fistsoffury took on older horses second-up after a fair Sydney effort and fought on well to comfortably hold second spot ahead of some handy gallopers. He’ll only improve.

ARISTONOUS: Aristonous also ran in the Another Wil race but he showed he was one to follow with the way he finished off over the last 400m. The Annabel Neasham-trained galloper had to go back from the wide draw but ran on solidly at his first run since late January. He’ll be fitter for that outing and should find a suitable race soon.

CRUNCH TIME

Two-year-old DRIFTING topped the time sheets at Flemington when chasing home the smart BOLD BASTILLE, running the fastest last 600m of the meeting, clocking 33.47 seconds while matching ANOTHER WIL for the fastest last 200m of the meeting, running that sectional in 11.56 seconds. WALTZ ON BY ran the third quickest last 600m, clocking 33.66 seconds while closing well in the first race of the meeting. LONGTIMEDREAMING might be a coming winner, running the fourth fastest last 600m of 33.67 seconds.

PLEASE FORGIVE

STRAWBERRY ROCK: The Ciaron Maher-trained Strawberry Rock had a red light on him with an eye-catching finish at Caulfield, which prompted him to start at $4.60 at Flemington. He had every chance but didn’t have the same dash when third behind the consistent Aramco over 2000m at Flemington. He might be looking for 2400m now so is worth another chance when he gets up to that trip.

RIFF ROCKET: Riff Rocket was a beaten favourite in the Group 1 Australian Guineas but he lost no admirers with his effort. He easily won the CS Hayes Stakes when resuming but gave a little more start in a tougher race in the Australian Guineas. Jockey Craig Williams had a little trouble getting him clear early in the straight but Riff Rocket finished off well. He’s a classy galloper that could even be competitive against the older horses in the Australian Cup.

AYRTON: Ayrton drew barrier one but that gate proved his downfall in the Blamey Stakes. He followed the speed but not even Jamie Kah’s talents were able to get him out of a pocket until it was too late. Ayrton finished well when finally clear at the 100m to be beaten a length in an unlucky outing.

TRACK TALK

“It was sort of like a hamburger with the lot, we were the melted cheese, it did stop her for a little bit” — Sans Doute’s jockey Celine Gaudray said things got tight before the mare eventually prevailed in the first race at Flemington.

“It was really nice to see her come out and show everyone that she does have that ability” — Co-trainer Ben Hayes was relieved speedy filly Bold Bastille showed her real form after a setback that caused her last-start defeat at Caulfield.

“One day when he steps up over further he’s going to have an amazing turn of foot against his opposition” — Jockey Jamie Kah said dominant winner Another Wil will only get better as he steps up in trip in the future.
