Racewatch: Tips, inside mail for Rosehill on Saturday with $9 best bet

Shayne O’Cass delves into the form for Rosehill Gardens on Saturday where he’s banking on a hero getting punters off to a fast start before some Joe Pride polish gets a $9 best bet home.

Massive Racing At The Stradbroke Weekend!

Racenet and The Daily Telegraph’s Shayne O’Cass delves into the form for Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, where he’s banking on a hero getting punters off to a fast start before some Joe Pride polish gets a $9 best bet home.

Race 1: 2yo Handicap (1400m)

SUPERHERO (8), effectively the ‘nephew’ of the barnstorming Robert Sangster winner Spright, has run way above his respective SPs at his two runs in what will surely be looked back on as strong late season two-year-old season races – just like this one, but one senses he peaks now at 1400m. Ditto pretty much every word of that for SWIFTFALCON (4) who had barrier 1 at both runs up until this one where he got saddled with 13 of 13 – ouch. DEPTH OF CHARACTER (2) was unloved on debut but you’ve got to love what he did.

Bet: Superhero each-way.

Race 2: Midway Benchmark 72 (1200m)

GLENBOWER (14) is trained by Anthony Cummings; this colt’s fifth dam is Royal Suite – the mother of the great Century who was trained by father Bart. Glenbower was off the map when he won first-up at Newcastle on May 9. He won like a horse that would win again – and again. ZOUKERINO (7) got better as his campaign unfolded at his first one under the Jason Coyle management. Went out on a high and has come back and trialled super. CONRAD (1) is trialling the house down.

Bet: Glenbower to win, Zoukerino each-way, quinella 7,14.

Race 3: Class 3 Highway Handicap (1400m)

KNOW THYSELF (2) should be unbeaten. In hindsight, barrier 3 of 7 did him no favours at Canterbury last start (behind Shehasattitude) and not sure Canterbury is his track anyway – but that’s all history now. Rosehill, 1400m and Bullock going back equals tick, tick, tick – boom. His danger could be another one from Scone, namely SILVER HALO (3), whose $16 win in that Class 2 on Cup day should in no way be considered a fluke. LETME ENTERTAINYOU (6) dug deep to win at Wagga.

Bet: Know Thyself to win.

Race 4: Benchmark 78 (2000m)

PRINCIPESSA (6) goes to the 2000m for the first time on Saturday. Is she bred to run it? By Vadamos out of a sister to Pride Of Penzance! If you go and look at her last two runs, you’d swear she was crying out for it. Soft track is her best track. LYRICAL GANGSTER (9) was the Black Booker of the day when he came from last of 9 to finish a close and closing third at Canterbury over 1550m. Has some deep form in these middle distance races.

Bet: Principessa to win, exacta 6 to beat 9.

Race 5: 3&4yo Benchmark 72 (1400m)

HOW DARE YOU (8) is so well-bred we have to mention it. Her third dam is Antwerp, fourth is Our Diamond Lover, fifth is Eight Carat. The James Cummings-trained filly won a Class 2 at Scone on Cup day to open her new campaign on the right note. Tick-over trial since and is ready to up the ante. Assuming GLENBOWER (18) has already run, LITTLE COINTREAU (4) becomes the ‘danger’. She just descended on them at Canterbury over 1250m so 1400m is bang on now. She’s proved that in the past. CAPTAIN FURAI (5) is a major player of course.

Bet: How Dare You to win.

Race 6: Benchmark 78 (1300m)

LEFT FIELD (6) has been above-average from day one. She would have had to have been given that she finished fourth to Kimochi and Kristilli on debut and has since gone on to score two wins and four placings from her next eight starts (including a second to Cigar Flick last time out). All comes down to what the pundits call ‘race shape’ and ‘timing’. That goes double for ANAGAIN (8). She’s the 2021 Kindergarten Stakes runner-up to Paulele who is famously slow early but fast late – Anagain that is. DAZZLING LUCY (3) and DEMIANA (4) make obvious appeal.

Bet: Left Field to win, quinella 6,8.

Race 7: 3&4yo Benchmark 72 (1100m)

WILD BOTANICA (7) was one of 103 foals from Speith’s first crop. Long story short, she has three wins from 16 starts; the one thing about her is that she seemed to lodge one PB after another towards the end of her last prep and came back with a beauty behind stablemate The Black Cloud. HANAU (5), by Snitzel out of a sister to Pierro, is nearly impossible to fault. The Xidaki and Pushy form on his CV stamps him as at least a Saturday-horse. I could find reason to forgive TSARINA SOPHIA (10)’s first-up run. Back home, extra 100m suits.

Bet: Wild Botanica to win (best bet).

Race 8: Listed Winter Cup (2400m)

HOPEFUL (2) is up to 2400m again on Saturday is a very ordinary renewal of the Winter Cup. My point here is that he ran so well in what was a fair superior Lord Mayor’s Cup last Saturday that he almost picks himself. In mean, what price would Eliyass be if he backed up? That said, it is a long way off being a slam-dunk for Hopeful given the presence of the Chris Waller-trained BONNY EZRA (5) who has knocking around in some decent races in Brisbane. One more thing, Bonny Ezra was beaten a lip in the 2022 Winter Cup; his only run at the track/trip.

Bet: Hopeful to win, quinella 2,5, Daily Double 1st Leg (2), 2nd Leg (6).

Race 9: Benchmark 78 (1500m)

DEFICIT (2) is $23 compared to his stablemate FRANZ JOSEF (6), the 6/4 fav, but I can’t see them that far apart. Yes, Franz Josef is the fitter and ‘faster’ horse and maybe even a better horse by the time he is finished, who knows. But trust me, Deficit is capable of pulling out a big one fresh. He just needs it all to play out for him; no bias, good clip and a George Moore ride from Bailey Wheeler. Speaking of big runs fresh; reckon Bjorn Baker’s Galileo gelding OUR ANCHORAGE (5) walks away as an eye-catcher.

Bet: Deficit each-way, Our Anchorage to place.

Race 10: Colts, Horses and Geldings Benchmark 78 (1300m)

PEACE OFFICER (6) ran in a Pierro, Skyline, Pago Pago and Baillieu as a 2YO and was pretty darn creditable in most of them. That just underlines what his Hall of Fame trainer Clarry Conners thought/thinks of him. As for Saturday, Peace Officer has two from four first-up and the trials are all rippers. SANDPAPER (4), a Snitzel out of a sister to Pierro, bears attention and respect here. Has the talent. He was second to Mumbai Jewel in the Pierro (fittingly enough) as a two-year-old.

Bet: Peace Officer each-way.
