FOUR-PLAY: Gilbert Gardiner’s $200 betting strategy

CAULFIELD RACE 2: BENCHMARK 78 (1400m)
BET: $25 each-way ROGUE ROCKER (13) $13/$3.70
Always needs luck with a get back, run on pattern but shown enough the past two starts to suggest a third-up strike should not be overlooked. There is a lot of speed engaged in the 1400m Benchmark 78 on Saturday and from barrier six the Shane Jackson-trained galloper should get every opportunity to finish off strongly with the rail back in the true position. Rogue Rocket has won and placed third-up previously.

CAULFIELD RACE 5: BENCHMARK 78 (2000m)
BET: $25 each-way MATRON BULLWINKEL (14) at $12/$3.80
Not won for a long time, September last year, but showed a glimpse of her best form last start at Caulfield, surging into third behind LITTLE JACK (10), who saluted by 2.8 lengths. Matron Bullwinkel finished 3.3 lengths behind and carried 1kg more than Little Jack last start. The Ciaron Maher-trained mare has 2.5kg swing in weight on Saturday, drawn kinder, gate five compared to 11 last start, and is proven on wet and dry tracks.

CAULFIELD RACE 7: 3YO OPEN (1100m)
BET: $25 each-way GITALONG (1) at $6.50/$2.50
Chased hard first-up behind a fast and smart one in Whistlefield a fortnight ago at Caulfield and third-placed Fleetwood franked the form last Saturday at Flemington, third again in the Listed Creswick Sprint Series Final. Gitalong should be better the run last start and hard to get past in the straight. Respect the market support for favourite MAJOR SHARE (6), unbeaten in three starts on the provincial circuit, but a big step in grade here.

CAULFIELD RACE 8: GROUP 3 SIR JOHN MONASH STAKES (1200m)
BET: $25 each-way ASHFORD STREET (1) at $5.50/$1.70
A combination of fitness and conditions could be a factor here, with Ashford Street best suited on the rain-affected ground compared to the classier, first-up sprinters RECOMMENDATION (2) and MORNINGTON GLORY (3). Ashford Street has three solid runs under the belt and a significant jockey upgrade with Damian Lane chasing the ride. Happy to play at the price

QUADZILLA

LEG 1, RACE 6
NATION’S CALL (15) showed grit to win last start at Sandown after being briefly headed by Awash, who has won again since. The imported galloper has barely put a foot wrong in Australia, two wins and debut second in three starts for Robbie Griffiths and Mathew de Kock. HENNESSY LAD (19) placed third behind Awash last start, similar form line to the favourite and three times’ the price. Include BRITISH COLUMBIA (13) at odds, gets in light and touched off third-up last campaign at Caulfield.
1ST LEG 13, 15, 19

LEG 2, RACE 7
GITALONG (1) should be hard to beat. Found only one better last start at Caulfield and form behind him franked since. MAJOR SHARE (6) could not have been more impressive winning three on the bounce at the provincial, first time in the big smoke but must respect the progressive sprinter. OAK HILL (3) failed to handle the straight and tempo last start at Flemington, suited back around a bend. LE PARRAIN (8) the pick of five Ciaron Maher-trained runners.
2ND LEG 1, 3, 6, 8

LEG 3, RACE 8
ASHFORD STREET (1) on top with fitness and conditions to suit. Be staggered if not at the pointy end of the finish. RECOMMENDATION (2) has the class edge rating wise and could be hard to beat with even luck in the small field. Drier ground the better for him. MORNINGTON GLORY (3) has won and placed first-up previously. MRS CHRISSIE (5) could be hard to run down if allowed to dictate the race.
3RD LEG 1, 2, 3, 5

LEG 4, RACE 9
RHEINBERG (4) and ST LAWRENCE (8) hardest to split as top selections on recent form and both rise 4kg from their last start one-two at Caulfield. Either could win again Saturday. REGARDSMAREE (12) rattled off sharp late splits last start sixth behind Rheinberg and St Lawrence. Fitter again, drawn much better and gets in basically with the same weight. Watch for him late. Include CHORLTON LANE (6).
4TH LEG 4, 6, 8, 10, 12
