Four-play, Quadzilla: Gilbert Gardiner’s $200 betting strategy for The Valley

Gilbert Gardiner thinks a runner priced at double-figure odds can get the cash for punters at The Valley on Saturday … as well as put some nice value into the quaddie.

FOUR-PLAY

RACE 2: 3YO COLTS AND GELDINGS (1200m)
$25 each-way POLYGLOT (8) $4.80/$1.70
Drawn to lead and should be hard to catch around The Valley. Tuned up a treat with a nice working gallop at the tight-turning circuit last Tuesday. Runner-up on debut at Sale and then bolted in on heavy ground at Bendigo second-up. DAGGERS (6) obviously the testing material off a dominant win at Sandown.

RACE 4: 3YO FILLIES (1200m)
$50 win PHOTOGRAPH (4) at $4.40
Could be a hot start for Godolphin trainer James Cummings with two strong winning chances inside the first four races. Loved the way Photograph gobbled up her opposition at Sandown like a filly going places last start. Photograph won with authority at Scone two starts back and improved off that. Drawn to stalk MANOLO BLING (1) and should be strongest late.

RACE 8: LISTED CARLYON STAKES (1000m)
$50 win BOLD BASTILLE (9) at $2.90/$1.35
Too fast, too good and no weight on her back, impossible to knock Bold Bastille in this. Sure it is not her grand final but the electric filly has every chance to build on her record. Won four out of five with the only blemish first-up last campaign in an 1100m Group 2, the filly showed signs of an illness days later. Won three straight to round out the preparation.

RACE 9: BENCHMARK 84 (1200m)
$25 each-way PROWLING (9) at $12/$3.50
Good first-up down the straight, held ground all the way to the post to run fifth, and should improve naturally. Solid second-up record, a win and three placings from five starts and has been in the money at The Valley previously, albeit a couple of seasons ago. Prowling has won four of 23 and placed nine times, should be in the finish somewhere.

QUADZILLA

LEG 1, RACE 6
REGAL ZEUS (8) won well two starts back and then found one better, who benefited from a four kilogram advantage, at The Valley. STEP ASIDE (11) caught the eye last start at Flemington behind Rise At Dawn, who has won again since. Wide draw the query and first look at The Valley. Include TROSETTEE (7) and CAWDOR (5), who has conditions to suit on rain-affected ground. Tricky race overall.
1ST LEG 5, 7, 8, 11

LEG 2, RACE 7
SEA WHAT I SEE (6) won six straight last campaign, rising from a maiden to Listed winner to emerge as a spring player. Gets in nice and light with only 53kg on her back – should be winning. HOLYMANZ (2) raced well first-up at Flemington, 1.4 lengths behind Gentleman Roy who has won again since. RHAPSODY CHIC (7) unlucky last Saturday at Caulfield but might’ve struck a tough race here. The five-year-old gelding has won five out of six on wet ground.
2ND LEG 2, 6, 7

LEG 3, RACE 8
BOLD BASTILLE (9) should be too sharp and too good with a fly weight on her back – 50.5kg – in the Listed Carlyon Stakes. Bold Bastille has won four out of five starts and has speed to burn. MORNINGTON GLORY (5) the testing material certainly and won with a leg in the air last start at The Valley to build on a perfect track and distance record (2-2). Group 1 placed last campaign but giving 6.5kg weight to Bold Bastille. SANS DOUTE (7) must be included, should get the last crack at them.
3RD LEG 5, 7, 9

LEG 4, RACE 9
RAIKOKE (4) has prepped up nicely for his second racing campaign with two jumpout wins. The four-year-old gelding built up similarly last summer and duly saluted in a maiden on debut and then won a Group 3 second-up. EXTRATWO (8) likes the Valley and has the services of Blake Shinn. Must include despite a wide draw. HOME RULE (2) and PROWLING (9) next best.
4TH LEG 2, 4, 8, 9

QUADDIE

Race 7: 2, 6, 7
