Four-play, Quadzilla: Gilbert Gardiner’s $200 betting strategy for Flemington on Saturday

Gilbert Gardiner has identified two excellent each-way chances at Flemington on Saturday, where he’s zeroing in on what should be a lucrative quadzilla.

Racenet and The Herald-Sun’s Gilbert Gardiner has identified two excellent each-way chances at Flemington on Saturday, where he’s zeroing in on what should be a lucrative quadzilla.

FOUR-PLAY

RACE 2: Benchmark 78 Fillies and Mares (1400m)

BET: $25 each-way APACHE SONG (12) $6.50/$2.40

Overcame a wide draw to lead, dictate and beat all but a smart progressive filly in Miss Aria last start at Sandown in a similar race to this. No reason why Apache Song cannot fight out the finish again on Saturday at Flemington. The Sioux Nation filly has won two of 10 starts and placed another three times. Three-year-old up against the older mares a sign of intent and benefits from a distinct weight advantage on the opposition.

RACE 4: Benchmark 84 (2500m)

BET: $50 win BERKSHIRE BREEZE (4) at $4.20

Imported stayer having only fourth Australian start dropped back to the provincials last start and won with plenty of authority. Touched off late in the start prior at Caulfield in another 2000m race so rise in grade no issue at all. Best form in Europe was at 2400m and beyond, so only query here is if the jump from 2000m to 2500m is a bit much third-up. Should be right in the thick of the action from the low draw, with favourite QUANTUM CAT (3) one outside him in barrier three.

RACE 6: Benchmark 100 (2000m)

BET: $25 each-way BELTORO (7) at $9/$3

Doesn’t win out of turn, six of 37 starts, but showed enough against the race shape last time out to have an each-way nibble. Beltoro has won at Flemington twice from eight attempts including one of two at 2000m. Drawn nicely and has benefit of in-form apprentice jockey Jaylah Kennedy’s three kilogram discount – down to 53kg. Beltoro carried 56kg last start when 3.3 lengths behind Pudding at Sandown, who dictated a slowly-run race and duly saluted. The backmarkers had no hope under those circumstances.

RACE 8: Benchmark 84 (1400m)

BET: $50 win ELOUYOU (20) at $3.40

Toughest test yet but the progressive four-year-old son of So You Think has the upside and Melbourne’s leading jockey Damian Lane to navigate a path to victory. Elouyou has been runner-up the past two starts at Flemington and Sandown respectively, not beaten far on both occasions. Elouyou won dominantly third and fourth-up last summer, the lightly-raced gelding’s first campaign at the races. Drawn out but has the tactical speed to cross and settle within striking distance.

QUADZILLA

LEG 1, RACE 6
BELTORO (7) showed enough last start to suggest another win not too far away. MILFORD (1) must be included after surprising at odds last start, went back and charged to the line. Made to pay for the class advantage with 60kg. South Australian raider SILENT SURRENTE (12) should be ready to peak fourth-up. Include VIRTUOUS CIRCLE (2) and RED SUN SENSATION (11).
1ST LEG: 1, 2, 7, 11, 12

LEG 2, RACE 7
Lucky numbers could be useful here. Big field down the straight and nine starters priced $7 to $11 at the top of the market. STEEL CITY (1) would blow the doors off these at her best. First-up after a long break the query. Strong market push for MARBLE NINE (13) must be respected for the in-form Leon and Troy Corstens yard. Include PIVOT CITY (3), no luck last start, and WALLENDA (11) at odds.
2ND LEG: 1, 3, 11, 13

LEG 3, RACE 8
ELOUYOU (20) is up in grade but has upside. Ready to go third-up and form franked with The Open, runner-up last start behind Elouyou, having won since. SO RISQUE (1) has been a model of consistency and must go in. Include HE’S OUR BONNEVAL (3), who won two back at Flemington and not beaten far last start.
3RD LEG: 1, 3, 20

LEG 4, RACE 9
LOSESOMEWINMORE (17) won stylishly last start at Flemington down in grade. Stable wants to boost his rating to make life easier in the spring, respect the aggressive placement. LEGIO TEN (9) is a proven performer at Flemington, won and placed twice in three runs at the track. Include PIONEER RIVER (13).
4TH LEG: 9, 13, 14, 17

FLEMINGTON QUADDIE
