FOUR-PLAY
RACE 1: BENCHMARK 84 (1100m)
$25 each-way CHARMED RUN (6) $10/$2.90
Liked the mare last Saturday at The Valley but she struck traffic approaching the home bend and on straightening when fifth behind Cavallo Rampante. Didn’t quite quicken when clear late but happy to overlook as devoid of any momentum. Champion jockey Blake Shinn back aboard, he won on Charmed Run two starts back at Bendigo. Drawn low and should be within striking distance. Handles all conditions – won on good, soft and heavy decks – so takes some of the weather guesswork out of the equation.

RACE 5: GROUP 3 VAIN STAKES (1100m)
$50 win WONDER BOY (4) at $4.60
Wide open affair with the withdrawal of Tarpaulin and could easily make a case for all six runners in the field. WONDER BOY (4) jumped out enormous last week in a blockbuster 800m heat at Mornington which included Giga Kick and Coleman. INTEREST POINT (3) finished ahead of Wonder Boy in the jumpout so must respect the favourite on Saturday, who has the race experience edge.

RACE 6: GROUP 3 QUEZETTE STAKES (1100m)
$50 win DRIFTING (1) at $4
Will make her own luck on speed and should be hard to get past in the straight. Drifting has won two of her four starts, both on rain-affected ground, including the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes in Sydney – a Golden Slipper lead-up race. Drifting led the Group 2 Percy Sykes (1200m) last start last campaign and was only collared inside the last 100m. The three-year-old Zousain filly won an 800m barrier trial at Warwick Farm last month.

RACE 8: GROUP 2 PB LAWRENCE STAKES (1400m)
$50 win PINSTRIPED (6) at $4.80
Tuned up a treat, with three jumpouts under the belt, to fire fresh at Caulfield. Forecast rain only enhances the six-year-old gelding’s chances and from a kind draw, jockey Ben Allen should be able to ride his own race. Pinstriped was runner-up in this race last year behind Mr Brightside. A repeat performance would be more than enough to handle this opposition. Favourite PERICLES (1) must be respected and also proven on rain-affected ground.

QUADZILLA
LEG 1, RACE 6
DRIFTING (1) should take a power of catching and has conditions to suit with two wins on wet tracks. Drawn low to find the front and dictate. Blue Diamond-placed KUROYANAGI (5) has lots of ability, clearly, and resumed with a good second in Adelaide first-up. BEREZKA (9) has improved in her two starts at Caulfield and should be better again third time at the races. BELLATRIX STAR (2) must be included on her New Zealand form.
1ST LEG 1, 2, 5, 9
LEG 2, RACE 7
ARKANSAW KID (8) ticks every box. Track and distance winner, won and placed on rain-affected tracks and is proven fresh. First up last campaign the Harry Angel gelding placed second behind the explosive Estriella. MAOTAI (11) has earned a shot in stakes’ company after a dominant Flemington straight win last start. Respect the aggressive placement. IT’SOURTIME (2) can never be excluded, won six of 33 and placed 16 times. Will be there somewhere.
2ND LEG 2, 8, 11
LEG 3, RACE 8
PINSTRIPED (6) the top selection. Runner-up in the race last year and suited by the conditions on Saturday. Prepped up to strike first-up with three jumpouts under the belt. PERICLES (1) the testing material clearly, raced well with ultimate success in Group 1 company last campaign. MUNHAMEK (2) has the race fitness and will to win – class could be the question mark. BUFFALO RIVER (4) loves the wet and will be in front for a long time.
3RD LEG 1, 2, 4, 6
LEG 4, RACE 9
ELOUYOU (16) has conditions and barrier to suit. The consistent frontrunner should be very hard to catch with a weight advantage on key rivals. THE OPEN (8) has built a nice record – five wins from eight starts and placed twice. Drawn wide but could be a benefit late on the card with rain and track deterioration expected on Saturday. Include SANDPAPER (15).
