Four-Play, Quadzilla: $200 betting strategy for Flemington

A smart sprinter who’s been luckless so far this campaign can put some serious value into the quaddie for punters at Flemington on Saturday.

Racenet form analyst Gilbert Gardiner gives his four-play $200 betting strategy and detailed quaddie selections for Flemington on Saturday, where a smart sprinter represents serious value.

FOUR-PLAY

RACE 3: 3YO+ BM78 FILLIES AND MARES (1200m)

$25 each-way MOOR MUMM (9) $14/$3.60

Mare in form, won three on the trot either side of a break, and racing in great heart. Drawn wide but overcame similar adversity last start at Flemington to shade Little Miss Kubi, who bolted in at Sandown last Wednesday. Rising star Jaylah Kennedy has won twice in three starts on the daughter of Astern trained by Dan O’Sullivan. Gets in 53.5kg on Saturday and most certainly up to a top three finish in a tricky race.

RACE 7: LISTED STRAIGHT SIX (1200m)

$25 each-way NICOLINI VITO (11) at $19/$6

Hasn’t won for a long time, December 2022, but narrowly defeated first-up in the Listed Hareeba Stakes at Mornington before a luckless performance in the Wangoom. Almost impossible to make ground at Warrnambool but Nicolini Vito finished strongly to run sixth, beaten 2.6 lengths behind Tuvalu. Likely to get a similar run on Saturday, get back and run on but the Straight Six looks ideal third-up. Nicolini Vito has won three of 12 starts at Flemington previously.

RACE 8: LISTED ANDREW RAMSDEN (2800m)

$50 win THE MAP (12) at $2.80

Clear favourite and deservedly so. Bolted in track and distance on Melbourne Cup Day last year to emerge as a stayer of the future and has maintained the rage since, with Listed and Group 3 wins in Adelaide. Two starts back touched off in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m). The backmarker might need an ounce of luck from barrier one but has the benefit of Melbourne’s leading rider Damian Lane to navigate a path to victory.

RACE 9: BM100 (1600m)

$25 each-way EL SOLEADO (2) at $7/$2.60

Been up an eternity, having resumed last November and raced 11 times since, but barely put a hoof wrong with four wins and six minor placings during the stretch. Last start third at Caulfield against similar opposition and won the Golden Mile at Bendigo impressively prior to that. Wider draw on Saturday, barrier 11, could be a positive as the Robbie Laing-trained galloper has shown to a tendency to perform better racing in clear air as opposed to being cluttered up inside horses. El Soleado has raced at Flemington six times for two wins and two places.

QUADZILLA

LEG 1 – RACE 7

STEPARTY (6) kept safe in the market and best would certainly be good enough to win the Straight Six first-up. Class colt and undefeated in two starts at Flemington last year. NICOLINI VITO (11) must be considered third-up after two promising performances – not won for a long time but more than capable. WHO DARES (16) defeated Semillion last start at Caulfield and that horse franked the form, winning the Listed Takeover Target Stakes at Newcastle last Saturday. Include MAHARBA (7).

FIRST LEG: 6, 7, 11, 16

LEG 2 – RACE 8

THE MAP (12) looks hardest to beat bar none despite a tricky draw – barrier one. Bolted in last start in Adelaide and touched off in the Adelaide Cup the start prior. Won with authority at Flemington over 2800m on Melbourne Cup Day. Wins again with even luck. EXCELLERATION (3), who pipped The Map in the Adelaide Cup, could be hard to hold out again after short freshen up. Include LITTLE MIX (13), won at Flemington last spring and raced well without success since.

2ND LEG: 3, 12, 13

LEG 3 – RACE 9

EL SOLEADO (2) has been to Flemington six times for two wins and two placings. Drawn out but a positive for the gelding who appreciates racing outside other horses. Won the Golden Mile impressively two starts back and finished third in a similar race last start at Caulfield. GREEN FLY (15) stormed to victory last start at Warrnambool and must be respected with a light weight on Saturday. MR MAESTRO (12) and RED SUN SENSATION (13) next best.

3RD LEG: 2, 12, 13, 15

LEG 4 – RACE 10

SHESALLSHENANIGANS (1) has the tactical speed to cross from a wide draw and looks ready to win fourth-up. Respect the market support for ICARUS (10), impressive Sandown maiden winner opened $5 with TAB and remained largely unchanged. DIAMOND DECORATOR (3) arrived in time to win at Flemington two starts back then endured a tough run in a Group 3 at The Valley. Freshened since and could bounce back. Include LINKS (9) at odds, race well without winning the past three starts.

FOURTH LEG: 1, 3, 9, 10

FLEMINGTON QUADDIE
FIRST LEG: 6, 7, 11, 16
SECOND LEG: 3, 12, 13
