Herald Sun form analyst Gilbert Gardiner gives his four-play $200 betting strategy and detailed quaddie selections for Flemington on Saturday.

FOUR-PLAY

RACE 1: BYERLEY HANDICAP (1800m)

$50 win POLITELY DUN (2) at $3.20

Nice effort on debut at Bendigo, placed third on a rain-affected track behind Hazey Hill and WINSTON (4) then solid effort second-up at Flemington. Got back and finished off well at most recent outing to run fifth of 10 behind Jenni’s Meadow, beaten 4½ lengths. Should be right in the finish up to 1800m, with a good draw and top jockey Damian Lane engaged. Favourite STAY SILENT (1) the obvious threat.

RACE 4: RISING STARS FINAL (1600m)

$50 win CINDY FALLS (2) at $3.90

Could not have been more impressive winning last start at Flemington, went back from a wide draw and surged late to get up on the post. Drawn perfectly on Saturday so should be able to settle closer to the speed and get the job done again. The imported New Zealand mare placed third in her Australian debut at Sandown last month, behind ARQANA (8) and BINDING (1).

RACE 5: 3YO OPEN HANDICAP (1400m)

$25 each-way EUGENIUS (3) at $7.50/2.80

Has loomed to win a couple times over the journey only to find one or two better. Drawn out again but has the tactical speed to settle within striking distance. Going to need a good ride from apprentice Celine Gaudray to time her run at the finish as Eugenius has a tendency to think about things late. Even race so no reason why the Shane Nichols-trained brother of multiple Group 1 winner Streets Of Avalon cannot salute at Flemington on Saturday. Raced at the track three times for two minor placings.

RACE 7: DEANE LESTER FLEMINGTON CUP (2800m)

$50 win TARAMANSOUR (6) at $3.20

Best form in the race, just needs better than a Heavy 8 track to seal the deal and break through, having placed in four of the past five starts. Most recently second behind Berkshire Breeze in a 2500m at Flemington and earlier in the campaign overhauled late by Fawkner Park, who subsequently placed in a Group 1 and then won a Group 2 in Brisbane. Small each-way saver on THROUGH IRISH EYES (2) at odds third-up. The comeback stayer placed third in the race in 2022.

QUADZILLA

LEG 1 – RACE 6

BARAQIEL (6) has won four straight and could not have been more impressive doing so. Completely untapped and progressive, only query the Flemington straight first time. PIONEER RIVER (11) a track and distance specialist, three wins from eight 1200m starts and placed twice. Include LEGIO TEN (9) and SOUTH OF HOUSTON (15).

1ST LEG: 6, 9, 11, 15

LEG 2 – RACE 7

TARAMANSOUR (6) has the best form going into the race with recent placings behind Berkshire Breeze and Fawkner Park. Heavy track a query but the seven-year-old gelding has won and placed on Soft ground before. SPEYCASTER (3) has won three of his past five starts in Sydney, respect the Chris Waller placement in Melbourne. Comeback galloper THROUGH IRISH EYES (2) is third-up and placed in this race in 2022.

2ND LEG: 2, 3, 6

LEG 3 – RACE 8

SMOKIN’ ROMANS (1) could lead and win from barrier one. Down to 57.5kg with apprentice jockey Jaylah Kennedy aboard and been around the mark against similar horses in recent starts. Last win the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington in 2022 – a long time between drinks. Include WYCLIF (7), held out the in-form Milford last start, and CADMUS (6), who burst through to win comfortably at Sandown most recently.

3RD LEG: 1, 6, 7

LEG 4 – RACE 9

BEAST MODE (1) saluted at Sandown last start and could go on with the job. Flemington trainer Nick Ryan has a stranglehold on the race, with MANSIERE (15) and BIG ME (16). Mansiere has the right conditions, with a Heavy track forecast, and won with authority on the provincial circuit last start. Ex-Hong Kong galloper Big Me has trialled well ahead of Australian debut and first start in almost two years. CAVALLO RAMPANTE (19) and WONDEREACH (11) next best.

4TH LEG: 1, 11, 15, 16, 19

COST $100 FOR 55%

SKINNY QUADDIE

Start with BARAQIEL (6), LEGIO TEN (9) and PIONEER RIVER (11). In the second leg take SPEYCASTER (3) and TARAMANSOUR (6). Then in the third leg take SMOKIN’ ROMANS (1), CADMUS (6) and WYCLIF (7). Come home with BEAST MODE (1), BIG ME (16) and CAVALLO RAMPANTE (19).

1ST LEG: 6, 9, 11

2ND LEG: 3, 6

4RD LEG: 1, 6, 7

4TH LEG: 1, 16, 19

COST $100 FOR 185%
