THE Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park will transform into a winter wonderland this Sunday with Greyhounds As Pets staging its gala Winter Adoption Day.

The day of fun and frivolity kicks off at 10am and will see more than 40 greyhounds in search of their “forever home”, including a number of “senior greyhounds”, where the usual $150 adoption fee has been slashed to $75.

Two people that can speak glowingly about the benefits of adopting a “senior” greyhound are Camden couple Shannon Pestana and partner Josh, the proud owners of three adoptees, April, Ava and Lady Grey.

“They are the most gentle, cuddly, well natured dogs - we just love them to bits,” Shannon beamed.

“We went to the Easter Show a year or so back and saw the GAP stall and a few weeks later Josh actually surprised me by adopting Ava.

“Ava is four while Lady Grey is 11 and April is 12.

“They get along great and are just so loving and caring. Before this we’d had no exposure to greyhounds but now I couldn’t recommend them as a companion pet any higher.

“They’re part of the family.

“Especially the senior greyhounds - there’s just something about them. A worldly wisdom.”

And while work commitments may prove an obstacle for some contemplating pet ownership, Shannon says the nature of the greyhound feeds in perfectly with the hustle and bustle of work life.

“Both Josh and I work shift work and can sometimes be away for eight hours at a time but they’re fine,” she said.

“They are just so relaxed and happy occupying their time between themselves. It just means that when we are home they get spoilt even more!”

Sunday’s Winter Adoption Day will be an event for everyone with plenty of activities organised including Dog Lovers Market Stalls, best dressed and cutest pooch contests, stage shows, adoption classes not to mention the all important meet and greets with the day’s potential adoptees.
