Scene set for massive Greyhounds As Pets Winter Adoption Day on Sunday, August 13

On the back of a year of record rehoming numbers, Greyhounds As Pets is gearing up for a bumper Winter Adoption Day at Gough Whitlam Park on August 13.

Matt Tirpak spends his days plying his trade as a teacher so educating others is right in his wheelhouse.

And when it comes to the joys of adopting a greyhound, the Marsfield local is more than happy to spread the word.

“It was during Covid that I began exploring adopting a greyhound and after doing my research decided to scratch the itch and I adopted Flanders,” Matt said.

“It was a learning curve, he’s taught me as much as I’ve taught him but he’s settled in great. About a year ago his sister Lucy became available and she’s settled in great as well. I thought that would be it but when the chance came up to adopt their brother Boo I decided to dive in at the deep end again.”

Now the proud owner of three retired greyhounds, Matt can’t speak highly enough about their attributes as a pet.

“You’d think for such a big, sleek majestic animal they’d be a lot of work but it’s the opposite,” Matt said.

“Their routines are simple and easy and they spend most of the day asleep in front of the couch. But they love their social interactions on walks and holidays. I can’t speak highly enough of them. Best move I’ve made.”

On Sunday August 13, Gough Whitlam Park in Earlwood will be the scene for Greyhounds As Pets’ Winter Adoption Day, where more than 60 greyhounds will be ready to find their “forever home”.

In attendance will be Australian sporting legend Tim Cahill who for the past four years has been a passionate ambassador of the Greyhounds As Pets program.

“I’m really looking forward to getting home and being a part of a huge adoption day,” Cahill said.

“I grew up not far from Earlwood so it’s an old stomping ground and holds a lot of memories.

“It’s been four years now I’ve been an ambassador for Greyhounds As Pets and to have seen first hand the strides taken and milestones reached has been very rewarding.

“They are a wonderful animal and fantastic companion as I’ve seen first hand with our Lumo who the family adopted years ago now.”

Just last week, GRNSW announced that a record 2202 greyhounds had been rehomed in 2022-23, including the USA Program which rehomed 174 greyhounds during its first six months in operation.
