Trainer Ryan Balfour was stood down from handling horses after he was breath-tested at Saturday’s Morphettville meeting.

In their stewards report, Racing SA stewards stated: “After saddling Canford in Race 4, trainer Ryan Balfour was directed to provide a breath sample which detected a banned substance, namely alcohol at a concentration in excess of 0.05 as stipulated by AR137(d).”

“As a consequence, Mr Balfour was stood down from horse handling until he was able to provide a sample free of any banned substance under AR137(1).

“An inquiry into this matter will be heard at a date and time to be fixed.”

Race 4 was run at 2.02pm local time.

Canford, who was the $3.80 third favourite, finished fourth in the field of five, beaten 4.3 lengths.

Balfour had one other runner on Saturday, Set On You ($7), which finished fifth of six runners in the last race, beaten 11½ lengths.

Balfour had one runner under his name on Sunday at Murray Bridge.

Deevine ($10) ran eighth of nine, beaten eight lengths.

Balfour has had a lean season so far, training only three winners from 74 runners with a return on investment of -77 per cent.

He has trained seven black-type winners in his career, including two Group 3 wins with Canford in the 2022 Lord Reims Stakes, and Li’l Kontra in the 2019 David Coles Stakes.
