Major Share’s impressive record has simply forced Warrnambool trainer Adam Chambers to test the sprinter down the Flemington straight on Saturday.

The four-year-old has won five of seven starts, including at his last two outings, to push himself through the grades.

Major Share easily defeated his rivals under 61kg at Terang on New Year’s Day but will step up to Benchmark 84 grade in the VRC Super Saturday, 8 March (1200m) on the Straight Six course.

Chambers said he would get a better guide to Major Share’s place in the Melbourne sprinting ranks after Saturday’s $130,000 assignment.

“Saturday’s race is definitely his stiffest test to date,” Chambers said.

“He’s still on an upward trend so it will be interesting to see where his handicap lies and where his ceiling is.”

Chambers and Major Share’s connections are reaping the benefits of their patience with the son of Overshare.

Major Share only started racing in December 2023 but Chambers said the gelding had no issues as a younger horse.

“He’s on the smaller side so he has benefitted from being allowed to mature,” Chambers said.

“He’s about 25kg heavier in his playing weight than last time in, but he’s definitely getting better as he gets older furnishing-wise.”

Major Share has not raced over the 1200m of Saturday’s race with his last-start win over 1125m at Terang being the longest trip over which the speedster has raced.

However, Chambers said Major Share gave the impression he would be suited over a slightly longer trip.

“When he won the 955(m at The Valley), he was out of his comfort zone the whole way around,” Chambers said.

“I believe he’s better at the 1200(m) than the 1000m because he can travel at that tempo in his groove.”

Regular rider Tom Madden, who rides trackwork for Chambers most days, will stick with Major Share at Flemington.

Major Share has firmed from $3.50 into $3.10 in early betting.
