THE INSIDE MAIL FOR WYONG
RACE 1
Piempurr won’t get any better opportunity to shed her maiden status than this moderate assembly of non-winners (as in horses who are yet to win a race). Not only is the daughter of Pierro dropping back to a maiden from a Class 1 where she was in fact quite good on that particular Class 1 won by Deniliquin. No excuses. Lady Goodfellow is a well-bred Dundeel out of the Danehill mare Pearl Ardane. Has to make up six lengths to trouble Piempurr from their Kembla ‘clash’. Not impossible but unlikely. Mr Luke is very fit and back from the midweeks.
Bet: Piempurr to win
RACE 2
Single Babe is a locally trained mare pitched in her on something like 52kg for the talented apprentice Anna Roper. Single Babe has just two placings from her 10 starts but that C.V is wholly reflective of her pattern. Up to 1350m, fitter, no weight on her back - she could be the one to ambush them late. Dresden is another Wyong housed galloper, this one from the Tracey Bartley stable. The daughter of Shamus award has raced here twice and placed at both, one for his original handler Chris Waller, the other one for Bartley three weeks ago.
Bet: Single Babe to win, exacta 8 to beat 1, quinella 1,8
RACE 3
Think About It is a Proven Thoroughbreds/Joe Pride-trained gelding. Now, it is a bit early to be declaring this one the next Private Eye, but honestly, you would have to go digging deep into recent memory to find a more impressive debut winner at Kembla than this horse. What makes it all the more exciting is that the two placegetters behind him both won at Kembla last Saturday. Ilzoomya has been consistent throughout. Not as gifted as Think It Over but he might have the rest covered. Poetic Miss didn’t run too badly in a TAB Highway last month.
Bet: Think About It to win
RACE 4
The Replicant is a Kiwi-bred son of Tivaci who was costing his punting supporters a bomb up until last start where he managed to put it together sufficiently well to beat two others, one of them was subsequent midweek winner, Ironbark Artie. Let’s hope he’s on his way now. Brynner is back to a mile with a good draw and a good jockey. The son of Contributer is very fit and has a placing to Gin Martini on his C.V. So You Think son Believe So is liable to peak here third-up and well ‘in’ after the claim. He has run in two quite strong races to start the campaign.
Bet: The Replicant to win
RACE 5
Sacred Field is a Joe Pride-trained grandson of his Doncaster and Myer Stakes winner, Sacred Choice. She was by Choisir and it seems that this horse has a bit of Choisir and Lunchtime in him; you won’t miss him. So long as he doesn’t beat himself, he can beat the rest. Narito is a chance to be saved for Newcastle on the weekend having drawn wide here. Doubt there are many better-looking horses in Chris Waller’s stable than this guy who also happens to be a Denise’s Joy descendant. Givara is a half to stakes-winner Renewal and has been trialling well.
Bet: Sacred Field to win
RACE 6
Miss Faberge is a daughter of Mica’s Pride whose stakes-winning offspring numbers four at present led by the mighty Criterion. Miss Faberge, fourth in the Sweet Embrace and Magic Night, is on her way to the good fillies races. Trials have been fantastic. Ditto most of that for the Waterhouse/Bott filly Pantonario who has placed at three of her four runs, one in the Gimcrack, one in the Widden and one behind Fireburn. Her ‘worst’ run was fourth in the Percy Sykes. Crystalane is well-bred, trialled like an above-average filly too but strikes two proven black-type fillies on debut.
Bet: Miss Faberge to win, quinella 7,8, box trifecta 4,7,8,11
RACE 7
Belladeel has a compelling set of numbers. For starters, he has raced here at Wyong four times for a win and a second, those two runs were both over this same 1100m trip as it happens. Form suggests that he is not a first-up performer so we have to mark him ‘up’ big time on his very, very close second here on July 28 and keep in mind that two of his four career wins are in fact second-up. Da Nang Star could easily be saved for Canterbury on Wednesday. He has been as good as anything racing at this meeting. Very Sharp will no doubt be doing her best work late as is nearly always the case.
Bet: Belladeel to win
RACE 8
Insurrection is a stunningly good-looking horse. He was bred (and part owned) by Bob Hannon who is best known as the breeder of Shamus Award but there are others. As for more pressing matters, if barrier trials mean anything in this world, this almost black-coloured colt should be on the podium. His biggest obstacle is Edward Cummings’s mare Have Mercy. If ever a horse is better than its C.V. it’s this one. Once she puts it all together, she will be winning races high above provincial level. Trialled well behind Eduardo the other day.
Bet: Insurrection to win, exacta 8 to beat 6
