CANTERBURY
BEST BET
Race 6, No.11: CHOLANTE
After a disappointing start to her career, this horse has returned in enormous fashion with two huge wins and looks primed to keep it going despite going up in grade.
NEXT BEST
Race 2, No.: CINDERELLA DAYS
The sky’s the limit for this undefeated filly who should suit Canterbury at her first go at the track and it’s hard to see her not being in the thick of it at the business end of the race.
VALUE BET
Race 4, No.4: CINQUE TORRI
Could he upset his more favoured stablemate Savoury here? Jason Collett is riding well and should give him every hope despite the awkward draw.
QUADDIE
Race 4: 2, 3, 4, 8
Race 5: 2
Race 6: 4, 11
Race 7: 1, 2, 8, 10
JOCKEY TO WATCH
William Pike has a top book of rides her with Shohei, Inuwashi and Cholante looking like good things in their respective races.
TRAINER TO WATCH
Kris Lees has a huge hand in the last race with three horses that tend to fire fresh while Yankee Hussel is an emerging type who will relish the step up to 1550m.
THE INSIDE MAIL FOR CANTERBURY
RACE 1
Parisal cruised up to them in her barrier trial under James McDonald who rides her here on debut from barrier eight. If he can settle her one off the fence and a pair or two back, she’ll make her presence felt. Shohei also looked great in her latest trial and she has race experience on her side and should also take a sit and be a force. Lamorlaye has the race fitness to be giving this a shake with luck from the barrier fourth-up. Kerrin McEvoy’s ride will be key here. Poor Edna has drawn badly again but has the ability to do well if she starts.
Bet: Parisal to win
RACE 2
Cinderella Days has won her first two and took out a city race first-up with a bit in hand and has barrier one with Brenton Avdulla on who rode her to victory last time and this track should suit her with some cut in it. Insurrection loomed like he might have challenged Cinderella Days last time but couldn’t match her and the 1.5kg pull in the weights probably isn’t enough but he should run top three. Taurids has the Waller/McDonald team behind him off a surprise win on debut at Newcastle and has trialled since so he just might be a race day type of horse. Lady Harlem has won here and really quickened up nicely in a barrier trial and might be flying under the radar here.
Bet: Quinella 6, 7
RACE 3
Roots has to give away weight here but so she should given her class. She’s a Stakes class horse and despite the weight advantage she gives away, there she should just be too good. Little Mix comes down here for new trainer Annabel Neasham with great Queensland form and second-up over this trip suits and she was Stakes placed in Brisbane last time in so there’s a bit of class about her and she doesn’t know how to run a bad race. Yankee Hussel is down in the weights and is well suited to the 1550m here after a strong win over 1300m last time at Hawkesbury when she just got better as the race went on.
Bet: Roots to win
RACE 4
Are the two Bjorn Baker horses mixed around in the betting? Sure, Savoury won well last time in town but Cinque Torri also did at the provincials with the winkers on for the first time which did the trick. She has top rider on and might be able to upset the favourite. Green Flash had excuses last time and his form at this track must be respected at his best. Point Counterpoint flew home in a country race last start to win but he’s got a great record and beat Lord Desanimaux last time in so he’s up to midweek grade.
Bet: Cinque Torri to win
RACE 5
Inuwashi is so consistent and has been taken through the grades slowly and graduate to a city win here last start under William Pike who pilots him again and she should sit off the speed and make a run just before the home turn. He did get an easy run last time in transit though and it might be the same again. James McDonald is sticking with Akahata here after they ran second at this track last start and he’s now third-up and must be giving his best over more ground. Microna ran second last time to Navajo Peak which is excellent form but he doesn’t win out of turn.
Bet: Inuwashi to win
RACE 6
So how good is Cholante? We get to find out a bit more here. She bolted in at the provincials last time and she should stalk them here and produce her top turn of foot and graduate to a city winner. Embeller is going to present a tough challenge here as a hardened midweek type off two barrier trials and he’s got gate one with the leading jockey on. Audette deserves this crack in town from a cushy draw while Duchy Of Savoy has huge form around it from a Saturday race.
Bet: Cholante to win
RACE 7
Been waiting for Geo to resume and hopefully this is the day for a lightly-raced horse who has form around Roots and Kiss Sum whom he beat last time in and that is super form. The stablemate Loch Eagle is shorter in the market because he’s Stakes placed horse and will love it if the rain falls as predicated. Zarastro has Stakes form too and drops back in grad now second-up and he’ll be on the speed at a track which suits and he’s won at before but the wide gate is an issue. Capo Strada beat Conrad first-up which is good form and he’s placed well here.
Bet: Geo to win
