RACE 4: CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1100m)
Calga Power was a comprehensive winner at Tamworth 13 days after an impressive debut at Newcastle. The Kris Lees-trained galloper was a beaten favourite two weeks after that when passed late in a 1100m Class 1 here. Trialled since and can make amends. On The Quiet has hit his best stride now. Certainly has the talent to match and even surpass Calga Power. Off The Press didn’t have much luck last prep. Be wise to overlook the finishing positions.
Bet: Calga Power to win quinella 3,4
RACE 5: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1000m)
Movin’ Denman was a $6000 weanling purchase by Gina Rankin who has reccouped $132,160 over the years with this very consistent and very, very well placed son of Denman. He’s won five races and placed 11 times, eight of them seconds. Best of all perhaps is that he is a one for one at the track/trip of November 14. Sparks, Bivoauc’s brother, has won eight races, one of them was here at Quirindi. Maybe a bit hot and cold but his best would be good enough.
Bet: Movin’ Denman to win, Daily Double 1st Leg (2),. 2nd Leg (3)
RACE 6: MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200m)
Play It Again is in-bred to a influential broodmare called Steam Heat who is the third dam of this horse’s father Yes Yes Yes and the multiple Group 1 winner, In Her Time. Has the Kris Lees polish, Andrew Gibbons to steer and the trials were suggestive of a win. Speaking of trials, Chidiac went ordinary in his first one then came out and won in fantastic style at the next. Well bred, in good hands too. Rivana, Mythical Moochi and Zihuatnejo are players.
Bet: Play It Again to win, exacta 10 to beat 4
RACE 7: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1200m)
Arliebel has SP’ed at $21 and $101 in her two runs this prep. She beat one home first-up and two home second-up. maybe I am reading it all wrong but I just don’t think they were that bad. That said, this is her last chance given her fabulous numbers at the track and trip. The in-form Climate Control ticks a lot of boxes here in terms of the draw, the claim. etc. Threetimesalady, one for the Lionel Richie fans, is one for one at the venue and a last start winner too.
Bet: Arliebeel each-way, box trifecta 1,2,3,5
BALLINA INSIDE MAIL
RACE 4: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1000m)
Thrownunderthebus is ‘22151’ in her last five runs on tracks ranging from a Good 3 to a Heavy 10 and mostly around this distance. Inaugural Kosciuszko-winning trainer John Shelton has found her another ideal race and we should pay homage to Kirk Matheson, he’s been there for the ‘151’ of her sequence. Love Rat’s last three starts, out of 30 in total, are for Cathleen Rode and are all seconds. Drawn wide again so may have to go back and charge.
Bet: Thriownunderthebus to win, quinella 3,11
RACE 5: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1900m)
Three Graces was winless after her first 18 starts but she had placed seven times and here we are now and she is on a hat-trick. Both horse and trainer deserve lots of credit but so too does Siena Grima who got the timing spot on in that last win. Last-start Ballina 1912m winner Max ‘O’ Max is a tough and consistent gelding who beat Three Graces when they met at Murwillumbah on October 15. Meanasenko is another last-start winner.
Bet: Three Graces to win, quinella 4,5, Daily Double 1st Leg (4), 2nd Leg (2)
RACE 6: BENCHMARK 82 HANDICAP (1300m)
Maximum Vortex is a stablemate of Three Graces and gave trainer Ethan Ensby and jockey Siena Grima a race to race double when both horses won at Grafton on November 24. Loathe to tip against Maximum Vortex but 1300m barrier 10, 59kg, are three strikes and out as far as win betting goes. Single Touch is probably just as unknown at 1300m as Maximum Vortex is but maybe they are just the best horses in the race - and it is Ballina too.
Bet: Box trifecta 2,5,7,11
RACE 7: MAIDEN PLATE (1400m)
Irish Gift is ‘234’ in his three runs for Daniel Bowen. All three were fine but you’ve got to mark him up a bit for the first of them when he chased home a very smart Matthew Dunn 3YO named Moon Sweeper. Back up to 1400m and from barrier one is a dream scenario for the son of Shamus Award. The aforementioned Matthew Dunn sadldes-up So You Can Torque here who is ideally placed at 1400m, less so with the double-digit alley perhaps.
Bet: Irish Gift to win, quinella 2,3
