Queensland trainer Lawrie Mayfield-Smith eyeing another big collect with Majestic Boom after pulling off $101 heist in debut run

Lawrie Mayfield-Smith wonders what bookies and form gurus were looking at when Majestic Boom was triple-figure odds on debut, and says his galloper is over the odds again.

Veteran trainer Lawrie Mayfield-Smith has seen it all in racing but thought he was seeing things when bookmakers offered upwards of $101 for his first starter Majestic Boom on debut last month before winning at knockout odds.

After tipping it to some mates and backing it himself, Mayfield-Smith admits he had a tidy collect on the four-year-old and said he is ready to go again at Eagle Farm on Saturday, with some bookmakers offering as much as $21 in the Class 1 Handicap (1200m).

Coming off just one official barrier trial, Majestic Boom was friendless in betting on debut, much to the amusement of his trainer, who took full advantage of the situation.

“I’m buggered if I know, these form mobs, some of the things they put in there, I don’t understand,” Brisbane’s longest-serving trainer said.

“How you could have a horse 125-1 when it sat three-deep in a barrier trial at Doomben and run third.

“Some of them bet 150s, that should be for something that ran third in a barrier trial at Nanango, not Brisbane.

Mayfield-Smith wants to beat odds again to fulfil Group 1 dream

“I tipped it to a few blokes because I have always liked the horse, I looked up at the races when I was going out to watch the race and he was $31, so I thought he’d firm into 10s or something.

“I never thought anything more of it … It all went well for us in the end.”

Mayfield-Smith is undeterred by a wide barrier on Saturday, saying there will be enough speed in the race for his second starter to sit off them and sustain a long run to the winning post.

The four-year-old has been a labour of love for the renowned horseman, who says he is more than happy to wait for his horses to come on, rather than push them as two-year-olds.

“I don’t think they will bet the 100s again, even at the moment around 20-1 it is well over the odds, read the form,” Mayfield-Smith said.

“There is plenty of speed in the race, I don’t mind sitting off it.

“He can sustain a long run, so the barrier isn’t much of a concern.

“He probably had about six jump outs in total, there were a few problems with him.

“I don’t care if they don’t race until they’re nine, I rather it when they don’t race as young horses.”
