Trainer David Vandyke is eager to see Kiwi-bred filly Acapulco Girl hit the track for the first time on Wednesday, where she takes on the Schweppes Maiden Handicap over 1200m at Ipswich.
The filly was bought for $NZ110,000 ($A99,571) by Grant Morgan who runs OnTrack Thoroughbreds and is more widely known for buying Brazen Beau.
And while she has a long way to go to reach the champion sire’s status, Vandyke has a lot of faith in Morgan’s ability to pick a yearling and is excited about this three-year-old’s prospects.
FIELDS AND FORM IPSWICH WEDNESDAY
“He (Morgan) picked her out, really liked her and he’s a very good judge,” Vandyke told Racenet.
“He asked me to have a look at her after purchasing her and I was very taken with her, she’s a beautiful filly, lovely type, good solid bloodlines and she’s nice and tough.
“Ultimately I think she’ll run a good race on Wednesday.”
Vandyke’s filly is by two-time Group 1-winning Irish import Contributer, which was a star for John O’Shea during his Godolphin days.
As history shows, the now Kiwi-based stallion did his best work between a mile and 2000m, a distance the Queensland-based trainer thinks Acapulco Girl will eventually get to.
“She’s going to be best served over a mile,” Vandyke said.
“She’s certainly tough enough to progress into longer journeys and she’s got a very good will to compete if we put her in a gallop or trial.
“At the end of the day she wants to get out there and run fast and beat the opposition which is a great trait.
“Either way, she’s ready.”
Acapulco Girl has drawn barrier six for her debut in what looms as a spirited betting maiden affair.
Potentially standing in the way of Vandyke’s filly is former Victorian, four-year-old gelding Turn Up The Music.
Prior to making his way up to Queensland under Mark Currie, the son of Impending was trained by Flemington-based trainer Simon Zahra.
Turn Up The Music had 10 starts in Victoria under Zahra prior to heading to the Sunshine State, however was fairly unsuccessful in the majority of them, placing in only four of them.
Since heading to Queensland the four-year-old has had two starts under Currie and seems to be amongst much more suited competition.
The frustrating prospect nearly gave owners something to cheer about in his last start where he nearly broke his maiden at Kilcoy, only to go down by half-a-length to the winner.
Apprentice Bailey Wheeler retains the ride and will have a lot of work to do early given the wide draw at barrier 13.
While he’s no odds-on favourite, connections will be hoping it’s 13th time lucky.
