Saturday tips, analysis for Oaks Day: ‘He should jump, lead, win’

Saturday has rolled around again and we’ve got another huge day of racing around Australia, headlined by the Group 1 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm.

It’s Queensland Oaks Day on Saturday with some strong support cards around Australia, including a monster 11-race card at Royal Randwick.

There’s been a lot of talk about the state of the Brisbane tracks, however, after a sunny week Eagle Farm is expected to race well, but the the proof will be in the pudding.

The rail is out 2½m after being in the true position last week.

In the Oaks, Mare Of Mt Buller looks a nice each-way bet around $8 with Chris Waller training three of the top four favourites.

I’m keen on Wategos in the Spear Chief, Moravia in the Queensland Day Stakes, and La Crique in the Magic Millions National Classic.

Wategos will be hard to beat in Brisbane.

At Flemington, Craig will be hard to beat in Race 3, Virtuous Circle is ready for a peak performance in Race 6 at double-figure odds, while Talbragar will run well in Race 8.

In Adelaide, Layeruponlayer looks a great anchor for multi players in the last race.

He’s short at $1.80, however, it should be a case of “JLW” — jump, lead, win — around the tight-turning Morphettville Parks circuit.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start in the $1.40-$1.50 range when the professional punters get involved on race day.

Speaking of big punters, there was a time when a Bob Charley betting plunge could make a horse favourite.

“I was betting the value of my house every day I went to the races,’’ Charley revealed to Ray Thomas in a feature piece ahead of the Bob Charley AO Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.
