Hall Of Famer Lee Freedman can dream big as powerful 2YO filly Profoundly wins at Eagle Farm

Racing legend Lee Freedman might have a nice one on his hands with connections already daring to dream big with two-year-old filly Profoundly who won in impressive fashion at Eagle Farm.

Racing legend Lee Freedman is daring to dream he could have unearthed a future Group 1 prospect, with young filly Profoundly who unleashed a powerful finishing burst at Eagle Farm.

In the QTIS 2YO Handicap (1300m), Hall Of Famer and five-time Melbourne Cup winner Freedman loved what he saw after Profoundly scored at her second start.

Only five horses greeted the starter after a brace of scratchings, but Profoundly came from last to score with authority to the cheers of punters who backed her from $3.60 into $3.10.

Profoundly is a two-year-old daughter of 2020 Golden Slipper winner Farnan but Freedman is sure she will be better over the mile distance.

Ex-ATC boss to lead major review of Queensland racing industry

It’s a long way from a modest 2YO off-season race in Brisbane to the big-time of the Melbourne spring carnival but connections have every right to be excited and potentially plotting big things in future.

“Our dream plan is to have her run in the (Group 1) Thousand Guineas in spring, you have got to dream big,” Gold Coast-based Freedman said.

“She will probably strike her best distances as a three-year-old, I think she is a miler.”

Meanwhile, Matt Hoysted has a nice prospect on his hands after the trainer overcame a “test of patience” for Ouroboros to score the easiest of wins as $1.30 favourite.

It was only a Class 2 Plate but was just the confidence booster the four-year-old gelding needed.

Ouroboros hadn’t raced in a year since when competing in the 2024 $1m Inglis Sprint at Flemington when trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr in Victoria.

Since being sent north to Hoysted, the four-year-old son of Harry Angel has had one problem after the next just trying to get to the races.

“He has been a test of my patience and of the owners’ patience,” Hoysted said.

“He got travel sickness when he came here, then he tweaked a tendon then had an issue with his kidney enzymes.

“But this is a good way to finally kick off his Queensland career and today was all about giving him confidence.

“He will be running in much better races than a Class Two.”

Ouroboros led them up and wasn’t for catching in the 1000m dash, claiming victory by a length and a half with something in hand.

Hoysted is set to unleash his Group 1 sprinter Uncommon James on the comeback trail in next Saturday’s Group 2 Challenge Stakes in Sydney.

Champion Victorian trainer Ciaron Maher struck in the QTIS 3YO Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm when Goodlucktome did the business as the $3.30 favourite.

Goodlucktome had strong formlines for the race, last seen finishing just 2.5 lengths behind Public Attention in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes at Randwick at his previous start.

The eye-catcher was Paul Shailer’s colt Deep Focus who was slow away and did things wrong before the “work in progress” galloper finished strongly to be runner-up.
