Warrnambool trainer Matthew Williams out to continue seven-year Swan Hill winning streak in Elvstroem Classic

Warrnambool horseman Matthew Williams hasn’t gone winless at a Swan Hill carnival since 2016 and he has two strong chances to maintain that streak in Friday’s Elvstroem Classic.

Warrnambool trainer Matthew Williams is always good for a winner or two over the three-day King’s Birthday weekend carnival at Swan Hill.

Williams has had at least one winner at every Swan Hill carnival held since 2016 with Reflected maintaining his streak last year.

The stable has nine acceptors over the three days, led by promising two-year-olds Cachink and Colour Our World in the VOBIS Gold Elvstroem Classic (1300m).

Both runners have been popular with punters in the early betting on the $125,000 contest.

Cachink has firmed from $26 to $8.50 with TAB while Colour Our World opened at $8,50 but is the $5 second favourite behind the $2.90 top pick Just For Show.

Both Cachink and Colour Our World debuted with solid outings at Warrnambool during that club’s three-day carnival in May.

Williams said the pair’s efforts prompted the camp to target the Elvstroem Classic.

“We just backed off them and gave them both a little jumpout last week,” Williams said.

“I just thought, as two-year-olds, that to have a proper crack at this race, we’d actually set them for the race rather than just bang another run into them.”

Cachink finished 10 lengths from the impressive winner La Pleine Lune in his Warrnambool outing but pleased Williams with his effort on a biased track.

Williams noted the race has been a strong form reference with the runner of Guerite winning at Donald while the sixth-placed Golden Warrior has won twice since, including at Sandown last Wednesday.

“The filly has drawn a tricky gate (barrier 13) but she’s a good chance and Cachink goes up 100m,” Williams said.

“I think him having a run under his belt will help him.

“Against that biased track, I thought his run was really good at Warrnambool. The form out of that race is very strong.”

Williams said both Colour Our World and Cachink would spell after the Elvstroem Classic but expected the latter to significantly improve next season.

“I actually think he’s a really nice horse in the making and he’s going to be even better as a three-year-old over a mile,” Williams said.

“I think he’s got a good hope at Swan Hill.”

Dean Yendall will ride Colour Our World while John Allen will be aboard Cachink.
