English jockey Cieren Fallon’s enormous fine from his winning ride in the $10m Golden Eagle has been halved on appeal.
Fallon was smacked with a $100,000 fine and suspended a month for a careless riding offence when piloting the William Haggas-trained Lake Forest to victory in Rosehill’s spring feature event earlier this month.
Fallon’s lawyer Wayne Pasterfield was able to get the record fine halved to $50,000 at a
Racing NSW appeals hearing on Tuesday.
Fellow jockey Antonio Orani was hit with a $30,000 fine out of the same race and also suspended for a month but was not present on Tuesday.

“Antonio Orani got fined $30,000 and never showed up, which was unfortunate because I wanted to use it as a barometer to see what the panel would think,” Pasterfield said.
“We proceeded and the stewards rolled out all these precedents, including Greg Hall in the Golden Slipper.
“I simply pointed out that $100,000 is the maximum fine available under the rules.
“I stated if it was only careless riding, not reckless, improper or foul, how could it get the maximum?
“So they went off and thought about it for half an hour, came back and reduced it from $100,000 to $50,000 which is a good result.”
Earlier this month, chief steward Steve Railton conceded stipes considered issuing a more serious charge of reckless riding for Fallon after he allowed his mount to shift out sharply over the final 50m.
The English raider made contact with Lazzat, which created a domino effect to his outside onto Makarena, who was hampered as a result.
“What we saw over the last 50m is not a good advertisement for racing,” Railton said.
