Stuart Kendrick knows the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes is a big step up for unbeaten youngster Can’t Recall One, but figures he could have a key advantage over some of his rivals in Saturday’s $1m clash at Eagle Farm.
“Some of those horses that are stepping up to the 1400(m), I guess there could be questions over whether they will handle the trip,” Kendrick said.
“You know this horse will run the 1400(m) and he will run the mile of the Group 1 JJ Atkins next month.”
* Revealed: Think About It has to defy weight history in Stradbroke
Hong Kong buyers have been circling Can’t Recall One after he demolished his opposition in spectacular style in his two career runs at Eagle Farm in March.
For the moment he is staying put.
The gelded son of Reliable Man may not have beaten much – certainly nothing of the class he will tangle with in Saturday’s Group 2 Sires’ (1400m).
But it’s been the emphatic nature of both victories, storming home from last and putting paid to his rivals in the blink of an eye, that has turned plenty of heads.
“There has been a lot of interest from him in Hong Kong after his first two runs,” Sunshine Coast trainer Kendrick said.
“Hopefully he can give the Sires’ a shake on Saturday and then onto the Group 1 JJ Atkins.
“He has been pretty impressive but the grade of the races he was winning is nothing like what he will be taking on in the Sires’.
“His work has been good, we have given him a couple of nice trials and he has come back really well.
“I can’t fault anything he has done. We will find out where he is up to on Saturday.”

Kendrick says it is a mystery how his grey galloper will stack up against some of the country’s most promising two-year-olds at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

* Lloyd Williams to unveil highly credentialed import
He has high respect for Brutal Bowler after watching from close quarters at the Sunshine Coast on May 19 as the Kris Lees-trained colt, who will now line up in Saturday’s Sires’, won by almost three lengths under Craig Williams.
“Every second week there is another horse who bobs up that is going to the (Group 1) JJ Atkins,” Kendrick said.
“It is a year that we are getting a lot of nice young horses coming through. I thought the horse that won the Sacred Elixir at the Sunshine Coast (Brutal Bowler) was very impressive.”
