HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS
DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun)
(Moonee Valley, Ballarat, Ascot)
THE BANKER: Chris Waller says Yellen (Moonee Valley, Friday night, Race 9, No. 2) has come back a different horse this campaign. Happy to back his judgment on what looks a tough weekend. Was super winning at Flemington during Cup week after sitting four wide. Stays in the same grade, up in weight, but better drawn.
IN THE FRAME: David Hayes has sent He’s Our Rokkii (Race 8, No. 5) to Perth for the Guineas. Follow the lead as he has nominated it as his best chance for Saturday. Big spruik for Lips Areios (Race 3, No. 11) at Ballarat — a Andreas Wohler German import that won a maiden last start at Mornington. Buffering (Race 7, No. 1) looks hard to beat in the Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot.
THE RISK: Wild Rain (Race 7, No. 11) will start a clear-cut favourite at Ballarat on Saturday and has been flying. But best form has been on soft tracks and will have to work hard from barrier 13. The heat is another concern for punters. Horses like athletes, tennis players and footballers can react badly when the temperature soars, so be mindful of runners sweating up in the mounting yard.
THE TRAINER: Darren Weir has won his hometown Ballarat Cup only once. The stable will be keen for a second. He has Michelle Payne on Akzar, and the in-form Dean Yendall on Tooleybuc Kid.
THE JOCKEY: None are riding better than Mark Zahra, despite the hoop missing a large chunk of the spring through suspension. Rides Prince Cheri in the Ballarat Cup and has great chances in Lips Areios and Husson Eagle.

THE BANKER: Thermogenic (Race 9, No. 12) is a new recruit to the Gerald Ryan stable having previously been housed with SA’s reigning champion trainer Phillip Stokes. A half-brother to Nathan Tinkler’s G1-winning filly Nechita, this fellow hasn’t raced since finishing 3.3-lengths behind Magicool in the SAJC Derby in May. Trials have been adequate and he’ll be charging home at the end.
IN THE FRAME: Brazen Moss (Race 5, No. 8) has been running on at the end of a few mile races here and there of late and will thus relish the opportunity to step to the 1900m this weekend. He’ll need a good crack at them late and if so, he’ll be awfully hard to hold out.
THE RISK: We’re Sure (Race 3, No. 3) was most impressive winning first-up and whilst he is a terribly capable horse in a lovely race for him, he might not be as clear cut as all that with some promising types against him not least the filly Crystal Flute.
THE JOCKEY: B. Avdulla — no one is riding better!
THE TRAINER: G.A. Ryan — big day for him for coming up too.
LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser)
Morphettville
THE BANKER: Sagapuss (Race 6, No. 4). Unlucky here last week when she was held before getting out late and flashing home behind Famous Jayne. Has been a model of consistency here in SA for the Stokes stable and she looks hard to beat. Obviously done well to be on the quick back-up and gets every chance you’d think from barrier 2.
IN THE FRAME: Martian (Race 4, No. 4). The scratching of favourite War Point gives him even stronger claims in this race. Came back to racing well on Adelaide Cup Day when he dead-heated but he didn’t do much after that. He ran to the line well enough behind Defiant Angel last time, fitter for two runs back today and the 1950m looks ideal.
THE RISK: Regal Spur (Race 1, No. 2). Fitter for one run back from a break but drawn out here in barrier with speed drawn inside over the 1000m trip.
THE JOCKEY: Dom Tourneur returned from suspension a winner at Gawler on Tuesday and has some good rides on Saturday. Even with the scratching of War Point, Tourneur has a stack of rides in combination with Phillip Stokes — Sagapuss (R6), Tenere (R7), Caro Kann (R2) and Chica Calient (R1), while he also picks up the ride on speed mare I Am Gypsy (5) in the sprint and Astro Damus (R3) and Heridom in the last.
THE TRAINER: Lloyd Kennewell is enjoying a great first half of the racing season and sits fourth on the metropolitan trainers’ premiership. He has three key runners in the sprint (race 5), led by in-form mare Jennyfromtheblock, while he also has key runners late in the day with Nutherbottlegonski (Race 8, No. 8) and Blizerian (Race 8, No. 11) both resuming.
