HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS

BEAT THE BOOKIE: VALUE BETS

THE EARLY OIL: SANDOWN

DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun)

Sandown (Hillside)

THE BANKER: Backing Under The Louvre (Race 3, No. 4) has been like taking out a long-term mortgage — we just keep slipping further behind. But, finally, the distance is right. Has found 1200m too short and 1400m too long. So 1300m has to be perfect, right?

IN THE FRAME: Good Project (Race 4, No. 8). Drops 6kg off an unlucky last-start second — that’s more weight loss than a month on a Jenny Craig plan. Won’t know himself. Drawn awkwardly, but James McDonald is red hot and the roomy Sandown track suits.

THE JOCKEY: Stick with James McDonald. He was in sizzling form during Cup week. He rides Grand Marshal in the Sandown Cup, Demonstrate in the Guineas and Who Shot Thebarman in the Zipping Classic. That’s a $300 all-up.

THE STABLE: It’s Darren Weir versus Lindsay Park for the spring training premiership. They’ve had a bet, too. The loser has to muck out the winner’s stables for an hour in the coming week. David Hayes says his best chances are Rising Romance (Race 5, No. 6) and Tashbeeh (Race 4, No. 12), while Weir’s best look to be Mahuta (Race 7, No. 2) and Scarlet Billows (Race 9, No. 4).

SHAYNE O’CASS (The Sportsman)

Rosehill

THE BANKER: I Am Zelady (Race 6, No. 12) is a Joe Pride-trained mare that has been working the place down at Warwick Farm, certainly those two trials have been above and beyond. The daughter of I Am Invincible has a perfectly sound fresh record and this looks a lovely race to resume in albeit not an easy assignment.

THE RISK: Frespanol (Race 7, No. 6) is a terribly honest horse who deserved the win last time at home at Randwick. He is back in distance and ‘away’ on Saturday. The $2.70 is a tad ungenerous.

IN THE FRAME: Ziggy Willie (Race 8, No. 12) will take enormous benefit from his encouraging first-up third to Happy Clapper at HQ the other week. He is 2s 1-1-9 second-up and acts on all surfaces. Dud draw but may not mean anything by past time.

THE TRAINER: John Sargent has an army of runners (sorry, that was too easy) and they are a good spread of prices on the TAB Fixed Odds board.

THE JOCKEY: Winona Costin has ridden a double at her past two meetings. She’s 3s 2-1-0 in the TAB Highway’s and just a gem of a jockey.

LISTEN TO OUR PREVIEW OF ROSEHILL RACES ON SATURDAY

NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail)

Doomben

THE BANKER: Emtevee Queen (Race 1, No. 2) belted Boom Shucka on debut and you are being offered a similar quote about the pair on Saturday. Boom Shucka did win by a space last week, but opposition was questionable and he has to find three lengths to turn the tables.

IN THE FRAME: Homehill (Race 5, No. 14) has a shocking win strike rate, but much of that can be attributed to him being ambitiously placed for most of his career. Now being set for races in his right grade and off a much kinder draw this time (where he should be able to settle closer) he can break through again.

THE RISK: Sony Legend (Race 8, No. 12) has had plenty of chances to win in Saturday grade in recent times and while he’s been consistent, just hasn’t been able to crack it. Favoured again here, but strikes a field with very good depth and have to risk at the price.

THE JOCKEY: Matt McGillivray has a host of fancied mounts on Saturday, with trainers keen to use his 3kg claim. In addition to Homehill, he rides Boom Shucka (Race 1, No. 1) and Sea Red (Race 6, No. 12), who are both near the top of the market.

THE TRAINER: Ben Ahrens has last week’s winner Chillin’ With Dylan firing and can go back-to-back with the in-form mare Dame Destiny (Race 3, No. 10). Ahrens is striking at 20 per cent from his past 50 runners.

LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser)

Morphettville

THE BANKER: Back On Target (Race 5, No. 2) deserves his short quote he’s finished runner-up his past three and certainly gets his chance. He’s drawn to control the speed and looks a good thing.

IN THE FRAME: Sagapuss (Race 3, No. 4) has won two of four in South Australia for Phillip Stokes, she should settle handy to the lead and looks the one to beat.

THE RISK: Cavaloce (Race 8, No. 1) ran well when resuming coming from back in the field behind Scanty. Big worry is the wide gate on the Parks circuit. This is a good group of mares and she will need to be better than average to give these a start.

THE JOCKEY: Matthew Neilson is riding in great form, he anded a double last week and has another good book of rides with Sagapuss, Mister Holyfield, Held Hostage, Zeprise JOurney and Duke Of Earl in the last race.

THE TRAINER: Tony McEvoy has been enjoying a good end to the sring and he has some solid chances on Saturday. Mr Backchat is ready to fire, wwhile the big watch is Miss World first-up in SA for her new stable.
