Corey Brown’s high praise for Tyler Schiller ahead of Doomben Cup assault: ‘Reminds me of Hughie Bowman’

Corey Brown has adopted the role of mentor for Tyler Schiller and believes he is destined for bigger and better things as he prepares to tackle the Group 1 Doomben Cup on Fawkner Park.

Hugh Bowman hasn’t won a Group 1 in Queensland for three years, but his heir apparent will be looking to win his first in the Doomben Cup on Saturday.

Former champion jockey Corey Brown believes Tyler Schiller is cut from the same cloth as Bowman, who will ride Fawkner Park in the $1m feature, saying he has the attributes to make the jump from promising apprentice to leading rider.

Brown has taken on the role of mentor for Schiller and is taken aback by the 25-year-old’s attitude and hunger to improve, saying he has made his name in the sport through hard work and determination.

“Some of the young kids coming through, like any year, there are the ones that want to flex their muscles, but he isn’t like that,” Brown said.

“He just goes about his business and he reminds me of someone I am great mates with — Hughie Bowman as a young rider.

“He has a lot to work on, we are working on his style and stuff like that at the moment, but his biggest attribute at the moment is his good attitude and his hunger to be better.

“I love it, he’s not flamboyant about it, he just wants to do it better than what he is doing it at the moment.

“He’s always on the phone asking questions and they are questions that actually mean something, it makes my job easy because he is picking the eyes out of it, not me.

“What he has done, he has done off his own back because he has never really been a racing person apart from being involved in some trotters.

“He wasn’t born and bred into racing, not having the background or leg up into the sport, so his story is great.”

After producing a textbook lightweight ride to win the Group 1 Doncaster Mile, Brown said Schiller’s cool, calm and collected mindset came to the fore.

“It is intimidating coming into these races, there are the J-Mac’s and all the good jockeys there who don’t give you an inch,” the two-time Melbourne Cup winner said.

“The way he handled himself in the Doncaster was superb, especially with the lightweight because your mind often isn’t as good as it can be.

“For me it was the likes of Damien Oliver and Darren Beadman and Mick Dittman in the early days, you’d be shitting yourself rolling up to the barriers with those guys around, so for the way to deal with it the way he has, it is really mature.

“Why I think he is going to be so good, and I come back to Hugh Bowman, they don’t let things get to them that much, they don’t overthink things, where a lot of young jockeys can overthink it and forget about plan B, C and D.”

Fawkner Park is rated a $12 chance with TAB.
