Champion jockey Blake Shinn puts brilliant filly Lady Of Camelot through her paces at the Hawkesbury trials ahead of the Golden Slipper

Blue Diamond runner-up Lady Of Camelot showed she was on target for next week’s Golden Slipper with a sharp Hawkesbury barrier trial win on Monday morning.

BRILLIANT filly Lady Of Camelot secured her place among the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable’s seven starters in the $5 million TAB Golden Slipper with a runaway barrier trial win at Hawkesbury on Monday.

And Tulloch Lodge’s number one seed, Storm Boy, will tune up for the world’s richest juvenile race with an exhibition gallop between races at Wednesday’s Kensington meeting.

Bott confirmed Prost will go straight to the Golden Slipper while stablemates Fully Lit, Straight Charge, Shangri La Express and Espionage all did enough in defeat last weekend to lock in starts at Rosehill next week.

Lady Of Camelot’s new race rider, Melbourne’s reigning premier jockey Blake Shinn, made the trip interstate to ride the filly in the Hawkesbury heat and it was a worthwhile exercise as she scored by a widening margin of nearly three lengths.

The trial was held up for an extended period as some of the runners proved difficult to load but Shinn wisely kept Lady Of Camelot well back from the barriers and away from the commotion.

Lady Of Camelot began well but was eased in behind the leaders until rounding the home turn where she cruised clear to win the 800m trial impressively in a slick 46.72s.

“This is the trial we had planned for her,’’ Bott said.

“She will have a month between runs going into the Golden Slipper so we just wanted to keep her ticking over. She’s in great order.’’

Storm Boy is among entries for the Warwick Farm barrier trials on Tuesday but Bott said the unbeaten juvenile sensation will have the exhibition gallop midweek to complete his preparation for the Golden Slipper where he is the $2.30 favourite.

“Storm Boy won’t trial, we will give him an exhibition gallop between races,’’ Bott said.

“He has done great since winning the Skyline Stakes, he’s right on track for the Golden Slipper.’’

Prost, which ran second to Storm Boy in the Skyline, doesn’t need to trial or race again prior to the Golden Slipper on March 23.

Fully Lit lost his unbeaten record when run down by Holmes A Court in the Black Opal at Canberra on Sunday but Bott said the colt is still Slipper-bound.

“He had a while between runs and has improvement to come,’’ Bott said of Fully Lit. “He deserves his chance in the Golden Slipper.’’

Bott also found merit in the competitive efforts of Todman Stakes trio Straight Charge (second), Shangri La Express (third) and Espionage (fifth) behind Switzerland at Randwick last Saturday.

“Straight Charge was excellent, I thought he was very brave in defeat,’’ Bott said. “He was under pressure in front and fought on well.

“Shangri La Express is improving, he’s going the right way, and Espionage had no luck, the race just didn’t work out for him from start to finish.’’

At Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, the Waterhouse-Bott stable could increase their Golden Slipper representation with Anode and Johnny The Kid nominated for the Group 3 $250,000 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m), and Chateau Miraval and Southern Charm will line up in the Group 3 $250,000 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).

“These races are nice targets for them,’’ Bott said. “If they win, it doesn’t necessarily mean they will line up in the Golden Slipper, they will have to win impressively.’’
