Boilover king Ryan Maloney eyes JJ Atkins upset with Amelia’s Jewel half-brother as local hope undergoes vet inspection

Zouna will undergo a vet inspection on Saturday morning before being cleared to take his spot in the JJ Atkins, while Ryan Maloney is looking to cause another upset.

Queensland Saturday Preview | Racing Queensland

Ryan Maloney caused a $101 knock out with Socks Nation in the Queensland Oaks last week, now he is looking to cause another Group 1 boilover seven days later in the JJ Atkins (1600m), while another Queenslander in Zouna will need to pass a vet inspection on Saturday to run.

The popular jockey pulled off a Oaks coup and believes Annabel Neasham’s Bosustow can do the same on Saturday, as he searches for ways to knock off hot odds-on favourite Broadsiding in the $1m feature.

While Bosustow comes out of midweek company, Maloney said it was the sort of winning performance that suggested he could tackle bigger and better things.

“He was quite dominant the other day in his win at Doomben, obviously it was midweek grade, so it is a big step up for him on Saturday,” he said.

“His form down south certainly has him in the mix, I think it is a strong JJ Atkins this year with obviously Broadsiding and the horse of Troy and Leon Corstens (Bittercreek).

“There’s Zouna as well, who ran really well at Eagle Farm last start (in the BRC Sires’ Produce).

“Having drawn a gate, I think he will get the mile and we are hoping a few of the others don’t.

“I galloped him (Tuesday morning) and he ticked all the boxes.

Bosustow, a half-brother to star mare Amelia’s Jewel, is a drifting $41 chance with TAB, while Broadsiding is $1.70.

Meanwhile, second favourite Zouna was found to be lame in the near foreleg on Friday morning when inspected by vets.

The Lawrie Mayfield-Smith-trained colt faces a race against time to be passed on Saturday morning.

The colt shaped as a fairytale story in the race, as both trainer and jockey Adin Thompson chased their maiden Group 1 victory.

Owners however elected to sack Thompson in favour of Melbourne Cup winner Mark Zahra for the race.
