Monday Racebook: Brad Waters’ horses to follow, forgive from Flemington

Mr Brightside continued on his winning way and Melbourne punters got their first glimpse of WA star Amelia’s Jewel but there were many other spring pointers at Saturday’s Makybe Diva Stakes meeting at Flemington.

A restricted sprinter showed he would be one to follow while an Australian Derby placegetter indicated a spring success was imminent in a super day’s racing at Flemington on Saturday.

FIVE TO FOLLOW:

COLSRIDGE: Colsridge resumed down the straight over 1100m, which isn’t an easy assignment but he did a good job to be beaten 1.4 lengths. He pushed forward and faced the breeze in front throughout but stuck to his task well in the last 200m when he would have been entitled to tire. There will be something suitable for him around a bend soon.

BLOW IN: Blow In ran one of the best second lasts seen on a Melbourne racetrack in some time in The Sofitel. Jumping from Benchmark 78 grade to Listed level, Blow In started as a $101 chance and looked to have found trouble in the backwash of Antino’s misfortune early in the straight. Jockey Craig Newitt switched him off heels and Blow In charged home to finish two lengths from the winner, clocking the fastest last 200m sectional of the day.

ARCHO NACHO: Archo Nacho beat them fair and square when resuming in the Poseidon Stakes. He showed good natural speed to keep the leaders in striking distance before letting down strongly along the inside to score by a half length. With a bit of luck, Archo Nacho would be unbeaten, although he won on protest on debut, and has shown a distinct liking for the Flemington straight. Keep following him at headquarters.

STRETAN ANGEL: Stretan Angel is a lightly-raced filly that took on the daunting task of racing in a massive 19-horse field down the Flemington straight course first-up. She was in the right part of the field for the race but kept finding under pressure to go down narrowly to the more experienced Shesallshenanigans in the Cap D’Antibes Stakes. Stretan Angel will only get harder to beat with race experience.

SUIZURO: Suizuro got up into his best distance range in the last race at Flemington and gave a good account of himself in front behind some smart types, including the winner Carini and the Group 1-placed Aberfeldie Boy. Suizuro ran third himself in the Australian Derby but might an on-pacer worth following around 2000m mark during the spring.

CRUNCH TIME:

The issues that befell smart Queenslander ANTINO were the main talking point after The Sofitel but it was worth noting KALINO ran the fastest last 400m of the day to win the Listed event, clocking 22.12 seconds for that second. As noted earlier, BLOW IN ran the fastest last 200m of the meeting in 11.34 seconds. ARCHO NACHO provided the quickest last 600m of the day (32.96 seconds) and second fastest last 400m (22.16 seconds). MR BRIGHTSIDE made it impossible for his rivals to beat him in the Makybe Diva Stakes, running the third fastest last 400m (22.18s) and second fastest last 200m (11.36s) of the day.

PLEASE FORGIVE

SHAIYHAR: Forget Shaiyhar went around at Flemington, he pulled a shoe pre-race and had to be reshod behind the gates. He then had to work forward to race near the speed after jockey Jamie Kah had no luck earlier. He’s better than finishing five lengths from the winner and the stewards noted he pulled up lame.

DETONATOR JACK: Started at $3.50 but little went right for him when caught wide facing the breeze throughout in The Sofitel. Despite the tough run, he was only beaten a half-length by the impressive Kalino. He can bounce back with a softer run next time out.

DEVOTED: Devoted was well-backed, firming to start as a $2.90 favourite but jockey Blake Shinn and trainer John Leek Jr agreed the mare found the Flemington too firm, which was understandable as above-average temperatures and constant breezes would have substantially dried out the track by the last race.

TRACK TALK:

“He’s still just doing it all on raw ability, he’s got a good will to win and a good engine but he’s not all there, he’s not the finished product so definitely the run up the straight where he was unlucky not to have won, he should be unbeaten,” jockey Ben Melham says there’s much more to come from Poseidon Stakes winner Archo Nacho.

“We’ve always got to see how the horse pulls up but at this stage we are leaning towards Sydney, the King Charles, he’s undefeated over a mile at weight-for-age,” Ben Hayes announces the next stop for Mr Brightside after the Makybe Diva Stakes.

“I suppose the exciting thing from our point of view is she’s not screwed down yet so we’ve got plenty of wiggle room to go and this is just a nice starting point for her,” trainer Simon Miller says classy mare Amelia’s Jewel will only improve on her Let’s Elope Stakes win.

“It was a bloody long straight, I know that, they were burning along up front weren’t they? Those sorts of horses dropped off, he was left there for a fair while out so for a first up run it was a great effort,” trainer Clinton McDonald praised Star Patrol’s fighting Bobbie Lewis Quality win.

STEWARDS SAY:

SKIDIMARINK (Unplaced Race 1) – Pulled up lame in near foreleg.

PARTY PRINCESS (Unplaced Race 3) – Raced in restricted room near the winning post and unable to be fully ridden out.

PIVOT CITY (Unplaced Race 4) – Pulled up lame in near foreleg.

WENTWOOD (Unplaced Race 10) – Pulled up lame in off hind leg.

Jockey Amy Herrmann suspended for eight meetings for careless riding while Ben Allen was suspended for 15 meetings for the same offence. Both penalties were incurred in Race 1.
