The weights have been released for the 2022 Melbourne and Caulfield Cups.
Peter Moody import Spanish Mission tops the weights at 58kg in his bid to better last year’s third placing in the race.
Spanish Mission carried 57kg in the Melbourne Cup last year.
Northern Hemisphere three-year-old, and this year’s current favourite, Deauville Legend was allocated 55kg.
Past winners Rekindling and Cross Counter carried 49kg and 51kg respectively as northern Hemisphere three-year-olds and 2020 runner-up Tiger Moth was given 52.5kg.
Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter, releasing the weights for the 18th and final time, told News Corp last month the absence of a “natural” topweight in 2022 would cause the entire field to carry more weight than usual.
Caulfield Cup favourite Duias and Montefilia are the highest-weighted mares with 55.5kg.
Trained by Edward Cummings, the grandson of the legendary Bart Cummings, Duais carried 51kg when 16th in last year’s Caulfield Cup but the five-year-old mare won the Group 1 Australian Cup and Group 1 Tancred Stakes during the autumn.
There are 97 horses still in contention for the Melbourne Cup and 81 runners for the Caulfield Cup.
