On Sunday at Moore Park Greyhounds As Pets is readying for its biggest National Adoption Day yet.

And for anyone searching for a recommendation need look no further than David Thomas and his seven-year-old greyhound Smudge.

“I adopted Smudge at last year’s National Adoption Day and she’s now very much part of the family both at home and work,” David said.

“About a month after we got Smudge we adopted a Dachshund named Benji and they get on like a house on fire.

“When Benji came along it really brought Smudge out of her shell … she’s very calm and doesn’t bark.

“Their favourite pastime is racing each other up the hallway. Benji always gets the jump on Smudge but by the end Smudge generally gets the better of things.”

With 10 hour working days very much the norm at David’s graphic design business The Bug House, incorporating a bring your pet to work option has worked wonders.

“Because I spend so much time at the office it works great,” David added.

“When clients come in it’s great for them to see Smudge and how calm and relaxed she is. I’m sure it breaks down some barriers and misconceptions out there.

“They have the run of the office but only pinch everyone’s lunch once!”

A range of activities have been planned for tomorrow’s National Adoption Day with all comers encouraged to attend and partake in the day.

40 greyhounds will be up for adoption where the general $300 fee has been slashed to $75 to celebrate the day.

Another family to enjoy the spoils of attending National Adoption Day is Kelly and Warren who with children Dallas and Liza pounced on Roxy this time last year.

“She’s just so affectionate - settled into family life really well,” Kelly beamed.

“During the day she sleeps mostly until my husband gets home when she knows it’s time for her walk.”
