Glen Boss declares Wodeton can win 2025 Silver Slipper on the way to Golden Slipper victory

Glen Boss had an uncanny knack of identifying rising stars during his celebrated riding career and has declared Wodeton as the two-year-old he would want to partner this autumn.

Hall of Fame jockey Glen Boss, a two-time Golden Slipper winner, has described Wodeton as the “real deal” and the two-year-old he would want to be riding this autumn.

Wodeton looks a proper horse to me,” Boss said.

“He was very impressive on debut, he has a great racing pattern and demeanour.

“He relaxes so well in his races and for a colt who has only had the one start, it looks like he has been there and done that many times.

“We will know a lot more after the Silver Slipper but Wodeton is the two-year-old I’d like to be on this autumn.”

The Chris Waller-trained Wodeton puts his unbeaten record on the line in the Group 2 $300,000 Silver Slipper (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Wodeton has been installed as the $1.95 Silver Slipper favourite for his clash with some other highly-rated two-year-olds, including Bel Merci ($3.70) and West Of Swindon ($5).

North England was a shock scratching from the Silver Slipper on Thursday with co-trainer Adrian Bott revealing the colt’s blood count was not quite right.

“All is okay with the horse but we have taken him out of Saturday as a precaution,’’ Bott said.

“We will see how he does in the next few days but I would think we will wait for the Todman Stakes (March 8) with him.’’

Wodeton is into odds-on favouritism with the scratching of North England but there was already some confidence among punters that Waller’s boom colt would win the Silver Slipper with TAB Fixed Odds accepting some big bets including a wager of $10,000 at $2.

Kerrin McEvoy takes over as rider of Wodeton on Saturday as regular jockey James McDonald is overseas to partner Hong Kong champion Romantic Warrior in the world’s richest race, the $30 million Saudi Cup early on Sunday morning.

Since the Silver Slipper was moved from spring to autumn in 1998, there have been four winners of the Silver Slipper-Golden Slipper double – Farnan (2020), She Will Reign (2017), Mossfun (2014) and Pierro (2012).

Boss, who had an uncanny knack of identifying equine talent during his celebrated riding career that yielded 90 Group 1 wins including three Melbourne Cups, four Cox Plates and seven Doncaster Miles, expects Saturday’s feature sprint will confirm Wodeton as the horse to beat the $5 million Golden Slipper next month.

“The Silver Slipper is going to be a great race,” said Boss, who won Golden Slippers on Sebring (2008) and Flying Spur (1995).

“I know the people at Coolmore think Wodeton is an outstanding two-year-old and he looks the real deal to me.”
