Cox Plate or The Everest: ‘Freakish’ Amelia’s Jewel resumes for Perth summer

Unbeaten filly Amelia’s Jewel set tongues wagging as a two-year-old, now her trainer is preparing for a busy summer carnival in WA before potentially bringing her east next year.

Simon Miller believes his untapped filly Amelia’s Jewel is so special she could be racing in The Everest or Cox Plate in 12 months’ time.

The Perth sensation resumes racing at Ascot on Saturday to kick off what will be a busy summer schedule for her as Miller attempts to get to the bottom of what she could be capable of.

While her three career wins have come over 1000m, 1100m and 1200m, Miller believes she could potentially see out 2000m with time.

The popular trainer can’t help but get excited about her return in the Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m), which he says sets up a busy few weeks for the filly.

“The programming for the fillies over here is awful every year, you are always on the back-up, I call it the Big Bash Series,” he said.

“She will run on Saturday then back up on Melbourne Cup day, then basically 10 days later she has to back up again – they just smash the fillies up this time of year.

“I have them forward enough to win first-up and then I just try and build them through the runs.

“I need to figure out what distance she likes, we haven’t found that yet. Ideally she goes to the (Group 1) Northerly (1800m), the old Kingston Town Stakes (December 3).”

Bred and owned by billionaire West Australian businessman Peter Walsh, Miller said it was easy to resist the temptation to take Amelia’s Jewel to Melbourne for the spring carnival to take on the best this year.

Next year, however, could present a different opportunity.

“It wasn’t really a temptation because Pete loves his racing and all his family will be there on Saturday, so we were keen to keep her local,” he said.

“We didn’t even know what to really aim up at because we don’t know what her forte is.

“She is potentially the freakiest I have had, that is why everyone has latched onto her.

“She gets into impossible positions and then her turn of foot and acceleration has them out cold before you can blink your eyes.

“I don’t know, does she sprint? She could end up being in a Cox Plate or an Everest next year – who knows?”

After opening a $2 favourite, Amelia’s Jewel has eased to $2.30 with TAB to share top billing with the Neville Parnham-trained Snowdome.
