Cosmonova showed why trainer Joseph Pride holds her in similarly high regard to emerging stablemates In Flight and The Black Cloud with a breakthrough Sydney Saturday victory at Rosehill Gardens.

Pride and supporters Proven Thoroughbreds have had plenty of success in Sydney over the winter months and Cosmonova gave them more reason to celebrate at the first metro meeting of the season.

The daughter of Zoustar got her nose down when it matter to edge out the James Cummings-trained Dipsy Doodle to win the NSW Jockeys Association Benchmark 72 Handicap (1200m).

It was her fourth victory in just seven starts.

“We have always had a lot of faith in this mare,” Pride said.

“She had her first couple of runs this preparation on heavy tracks and we can see now that it wasn’t too her liking.

“She has come back really well with a couple of wins and she joins that group of good fillies, The Black Cloud and In Flight, all in the Proven Thoroughbred colours.

“They are all the same age and are promising mares.”

Cosmonova, a half-sister to 2024 All Aged Stakes winner Magic Time, missed the placings at her first two starts this preparation on heavy tracks.

She has proven to be a different beast on better going after backing up a strong success at Canterbury with a determined performance to win at Rosehill Gardens.

“She is not overly big but she has got plenty going for her and has plenty of ticker,” Pride said.

“It was good to see her do that.

“The punters didn’t like that form of the midweeks just getting there but I knew there was a bit more upside.

“I am really happy with that.”

Dipsy Doodle ($4.80) her rivals something to catch as jockey Kerrin McEvoy entered the straight with a three length margin.

But Reece Jones had Cosmonova ($9.50) stalking in behind and got the Pride mare on terms in the shadows of the post, edging out the James Cummings-trained mare by a half-head.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Vivy Air ($2.30) never looked likely when finishing one and a quarter lengths away in third.

“I was quite confident,” Jones said.

“I think we got the timing spot on today. First time over 1200m I didn’t want to expose her too soon.

“If I left it any longer she probably doesn’t get there or if went to soon she probably peaks on the run.

“She is a nice progressive mare.”

Barrier one was proving its weight in gold with both Cosmonova and The Extreme Cat winning from the inside draw early in the card.

The Extreme Cat was three back the fence in the Midway Benchmark 72 Handicap (1400m) before showing an excellent turn of speed when the gap opened.

Premiership winning rider James McDonald had to wait until the furlong pole to work his way into the clear with The Extreme Cat ($2.60 fav) surging away late to win by three quarters of a length.

“Lucky he is small,” McDonald said.

“He worked through the whipped through the gap very well but was travelling well.

“He was a very well placed horse, was prepared very well and came here in good order.”

The Extreme Cat’s trainer Nathan Doyle admits there were a few nervous moments after his gelding had got buried midfield on the fence.

“I wasn’t excited being in that position because I know he is a bit of a momentum horse,” he said.

“Once he got the split, he attacked the line strongly. Especially when the other horses had the momentum out wide, it’s very difficult to make up ground towards the inside there.

“But it was another great ride by James and it was good to get a result for Australian Bloodstock.”

The Paul Perry-trained Forecaster ($26) beat out Clarry ConnersPeace Officer ($13) for the minor placings.
