The pride of Western Australia Amelia’s Jewel has won the Group 2 Stocks Stakes at The Valley.
Jockey Damian Lane surprisingly pushed forward to sit second in the run, sitting off Pride Of Jenni.
She loomed up on the corner and won by three-quarters of a length from Pride Of Jenni, breaking the 1600m course record in the process. Deny Knowledge was third.
Amelia’s Jewel ran 1:34.37, eclipsing the 1:34.42 set by Lubiton in 2017.
Lane said the win “wasn’t that easy”.
“Lucky I didn’t sit off the pace or I might not have caught (Pride of Jenni),” he said.
Lane said he would recommend keeping her in Melbourne to target the Cox Plate.
Trainer Simon Miller said it “looked like she was doing it easy”.
“She can absorb pressure; she’s better when there’s high pressure and she’s not wound up yet.”
Miller said they would confirm her next target in the coming days.

Earlier, champion jockey Blake Shinn walked away from a fall at The Valley.
Shinn fell from Fasuto in the 955m 55-second Challenge as the field turned for home.
Shinn, who won three races on the night, crashed to the track but walked back to the enclosure uninjured.
Former top jockey Simon Marshall criticised Shinn’s actions on social media.
“Shocking luck! No room for (Fasuto) falling, (Blake) Shinn OK but what was he doing — riding into no gap and clipping heels!” Marshall wrote.
Fasuto was also uninjured.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained colt Griff, ridden by Mark Zahra, won the Group 2 Stutt Stakes from Verdad while filly Autumn Angel closed strongly for third.
Zahra and Eustace said the Caulfield Guineas on October 14 would be Griff’s next assignment.
"It's dogged, it holds on!"

“He took the race by the scruff of the neck (from the wide barrier),” Eustace said.
