Getting back to a bigger track could assist Roll On High’s attempt to recapture her spring form in Saturday’s Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m).
Roll On High relished wide open spaces in terrific wins at Pakenham and Flemington in the spring but missed a place around the tight Valley circuit second-up in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes.
Co-trainer Katherine Coleman, who enjoyed her maiden Group 1 win as a trainer in last Saturday’s TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick, said Roll On High might not have appreciated The Valley circuit.
“She’s still a little bit awkward the way she gets around and she’s still a little bit immature so a big track seems to certainly be a key for her,” Coleman said.
Coleman, who trains Roll On High in partnership with Peter Moody, said post-race analysis suggested the Shamus Award filly’s Sunline Stakes performance was better than it looked on paper.
“I think it was better than what it looked to the eye,” Coleman said.
“A couple of the form guys have said there was actually more to the run than what you see watching it.”
Coleman said Roll On High’s work since her last run indicated an improved performance was likely in Saturday’s $200,000 contest.
“I think she’s bounced through it pretty well so I’m thinking she can improve off that run,” Coleman said.
“She’s given us the signs at home that she’s come through it well so we’ll just get her back to the races and see how she goes.”
Long-time stable jockey Luke Nolen will ride Roll On High on Saturday.
TAB rated Roll On High as the $2.90 favourite to give Moody his second successive Bendigo Guineas after winning last year’s race with Waltz On By.
