Annabel Neasham’s consistent mare Defining returns to winning form with a stylish win at Randwick

A wide run proved no hindrance for gutsy mare Defining, who notched a well-deserved victory at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Winning trainer Annabel Neasham and jockey Tyler Schiller both pointed to a gear change as the foundation for ultra-reliable mare Defining’s well-earned and decisive first win at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Racing in the colours of Everest winner and current Randwick 1200m course record holder Yes Yes Yes, Defining overcame a wide run in transit to stamp her authority over her rivals and earned the admiration of her Doncaster Mile winning jockey, Tyler Schiller.

“I can’t take much credit for that,” Schiller said.

“She got stuck wide, she had to do all the bullocking work, and it looks like the blinkers did the trick because she towed me where we needed to be instead of having to sort of force her there.

Blinkers go back on Defining and she powers clear to take Race 6 at Randwick!

“Once she got through the ground that well, she quickened-up well in the straight and it was just a matter of if she did too much work late but she was very tough.

“She loves these wet tracks which is probably a big bonus this time of year but for a horse that big, she’s got a big heart. It was a really tough win today.”

Defining has covered a lot of ground away from the track since she was foaled at the famous Cambridge Stud in New Zealand in late September 2018.

She was purchased by Tony McEvoy at Karaka at the 2020 Yearling sale for $225,000.

The daughter of Not A Single Doubt increased her value quite considerably while under McEvoy’s care given her stakes-placing in the Listed SAJC H. C. Nitschke Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville.

Defining was part of a stellar line-up of horses offered at the exclusive Inglis Chairman’s sale in 2023 where he was snapped up this time for $280,000 by YES Bloodstock.
