Melbourne has been locked in to host golf’s Presidents Cup event in 2028 and 2040.
It will be the fourth and fifth time Victoria’s capital city will host the biennial teams competition, in which the United States takes on an International line-up minus European players.
Royal Melbourne has staged the three previous Presidents Cup competitions held in Australia in 1988, 2011 and 2019.
And while Royal Melbourne would be a frontrunner to again host the 2028 and 2040 events, it’s understood Kingston Heath and Peninsula Kingswood are also in hosting contention.
“Since the Presidents Cup was first staged in Melbourne in 1998, Australia and its passionate fanbase have played a leading role in the growth of the Presidents Cup,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said.
“As the event continues to visit new corners of the globe, we remain committed to a presence in Melbourne and the Sandbelt region, a place our players and fans around the world hold in high regard.”
Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements said: “We’re delighted that the Presidents Cup will be back in 2028 and 2040, cementing Melbourne’s position as a global events destination and the major events capital of Australia.”
With Covid-19 forcing last year’s Presidents Cup to be delayed. the event returns in September at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Meanwhile, Golf Australia has announced the Queensland Open will not be played this year due to “venue and scheduling complications”.
Pelican Waters, the Sunshine Coast course which is the Queensland Open’s current home, is undergoing “significant redevelopment” and won’t be ready to stage the event this year.
Other venues were considered but weren’t feasible due to “existing partnerships”.
Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland said: “We love the event being at Pelican Waters and the venue and its owners have been so supportive of the Queensland Open.
“We are so excited to see what the redevelopment brings, and it makes sense to showcase the new venue when it can be at its best, which unfortunately, with the renovation timelines, means we won’t be able to return to Pelican Waters for this great championship until early in 2023.”
