Two of the best putts of Jasper Stubbs‘ life have earned the Australian young gun a “life-changing” ticket to the Masters after a stunning playoff win in the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship at Royal Melbourne.
The 21-year-old Melburnian, who lives less than 2km from the course, came from the clouds on the final day of the tournament starting the day six-shots off the lead, earning his spot in the playoff with a start in the 2024 Masters and Open Championship at Royal Troon up for grabs after a brilliant final back-nine.
Stubbs, used his advantage having played Royal Melbourne “plenty of times” to snake a stunning birdie putt on the first playoff hole, only to watch on as China’s Wenyi Deng did the same.

But as they played the 18th hole for a second time Stubbs, who hit his approach long, was able to guide his 20m birdie putt to within inches, to the roars of the dozen other Australians who started the event watching from behind the green.
Coming from the greenside bunker, Deng missed his par putt, leaving Stubbs to tap in for the “life-changing” win, making it back-to-back Australian victories in the event following Harrison Crowe’s triumph in Thailand last year.
“I couldn’t think of a better place to win, right near my house, being close to home with a lot of friends and family,” Stubbs said.
“Belief takes you a long way. I’m a bit lost for words, but I did believe I could win.
“It’s just life-changing. It’s always been something I have dreamt of.
“When I had thre three-inch putt on the last and it was starting to become a reality before I tapped that in, it was a pretty amazing feeling. I can’t wait to get out there in April.”
Stubbs, the fourth winner of the tournament in the past nine years, hit the first tee shot of the tournament on Thursday morning, and was the last man standing.
He had to make a birdie on the 17th hole then a par on the last in regulation to post a final round of two-under 69, which was enough to make the playoff.
