The Australian PGA Championship is set to again start the DP World Tour season despite being pushed back to the last week of November.
PGA Tour of Australasia and DP World Tour officials announced on Monday that the event – to again be held at Royal Queensland – would take place on November 27-30.
The previous three co-sanctioned Australian PGA tournaments have been held a week earlier, and taken the place the week after the DP World Tour’s season-ending event in Dubai.
However, there’s now set to be a week off between seasons, which could lead to a stronger Australian PGA field.
“The championship has become a key launch pad for our Race to Dubai, providing members with a pathway to the world stage and showcasing the global nature of the DP World Tour,” DP World Tour chief tournament and operations officer Ben Cowan said.
However, the DP World Tour’s 2025-26 schedule is not locked on, leaving the possibility that the Australian Open may yet be played in the Melbourne the week before the Australian PGA.
But, as thing stand, the Royal Queensland event – won last year by Elvis Smylie – will again open the new DP World Tour season.
“The incredible victory of Elvis Smylie on home soil in 2024 was a highlight, and it has given him the opportunity to play a worldwide schedule, joining a select group of Australian golfers competing internationally,” Cowan said.
PGA of Australia chief executive Gavin Kirkman said: “Although our planning for this year’s tournament has been underway since Elvis Smylie holed the winning putt in front of a home crowd last November, today is the start of the official countdown to the 2025 BMW Australian PGA Championship.
“We’re looking forward to returning to Royal Queensland, watching some fantastic golf, enjoying all the on-course and off-course activities and seeing who emerges as the 2025 winner of the Joe Kirkwood Cup.”
Apart from Smylie, previous winners of Australian PGA at Royal Queensland include Cam Smith and Min Woo Lee, while Jed Morgan has also won the event on same course.
