Gary Ablett has paid tribute to his “brother Sel” after Joel Selwood called time on his career on Wednesday.
In his first words since Selwood’s gesture of carrying Gary and Jordan’s son Levi through the banner on Saturday, Ablett shared his love for his former teammate.
“Brother Sel, it only feels like yesterday I was 22 and you walked into the club as an 18 year old,’’ he wrote on social media.
“Fast forward 15 years and what a journey it’s been! You’ve been a champion player and leader, a loyal friend and an inspiration to me and so many others. I’m going to miss watching you play footy each week but am excited to see you step into the next chapter of your life.
“You should be super proud! Also what a privilege that my boy got to run out with you for what was the last time in your final game. Love you @joelselwood14.”
Jordan has also posted her gratitude to Selwood for making three year-old Levi smile, describing the day as “magic”.
Levi, who suffers from a rare degenerative disease, provided one of the most heartwarming moments of grand final day.
Jordan wrote on social media on Tuesday: “There are so many kids out there like Levi just as deserving of such an occasion. So grateful to Joel … in a moment that was rightly his, he chose to create a moment for someone else! Levi had an absolute ball!”
