Australia’s victory against Denmark in Qatar that sparked wild scenes on the streets in the early hours has now officially been commended in federal parliament.

Anthony Albanese congratulated the Socceroos, saying “you have made us proud”.

The Prime Minister moved a motion in the House of Representatives on Thursday declaring Australia’s support for the team in its future matches.

Mr Albanese said a lot of people were feeling tired today after waking up at 2am to watch the game, which Australia won 1-0.

“You then had, I think, quite an extraordinary period including those terrible last six minutes,” he said.

“Australians were, whether they were at Fed Square or in their homes or just hoping that Australia could hang on.

“It was an extraordinary win against a very high class team.”

Mr Albanese said when the salaries of the Danish and Australian teams were compared, people would “know we’re getting pretty good value from our team”.

“To the Socceroos we say, as a country, you have done us proud,” he said.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton also joined Mr Albanese in congratulating the Socceroos for getting down to the final 16 at the World Cup for the second time in history.

Earlier, Australia’s Mathew Leckie described his intense emotions after scoring in a 1-0 win over Denmark that took the Socceroos to the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time since 2006.

“I think in those moments you don’t think too much, you don’t have time to think, you know it all happened so fast. It was a great ball and I had one more man to beat,” said Leckie of his goal.

“Low and hard, it’s difficult for a keeper to save and as I soon as I saw it was going in I was so excited and so happy.”

It’s fair to say the masses of Aussie fans following the action from Federation Square went a bit beyond “excited and happy”, check out reaction to the amazing win below.

Post-game reaction

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold

“A lot of belief, a lot of hard work. These boys come in with a great mind set. We’ve been working on this for four, 4.5 years about the belief and the energy an the focus. You know, I can see in their eyes they were ready tonight.”

It’s hard to put into, or to describe the emotions right now. We always knew we could do it. We believed as a group. We had our doubters. With our spirit, our belief, our work ethic and how close we are, it shows on the pitch. That last 15, 20 minutes we battled to the end. It didn’t matter what they threw at us. We weren’t conceding. So proud, but again, we’ll make the most of it tonight, then it’s all about recovery. Obviously we have another game coming up.

Well that last 30 minutes was extraordinary. That’s just a bunch of heroes there. All of them.

The amount of work that they got through in these three games is unbelievable. It’s a beautiful moment for the game. Congratulations to these guys. Once again it proves that you never know, as long as you’re brave enough, as long as you back yourself enough and when you’re wearing that shirt, anything can happen. It’s a historic moment. Well done to all of them.

Mark Bosnich

You’re right, not only the 11 players that

played the one that come on and the ones in the squad, 26 heroes. The coaching staff and especially Graham Arnold. And look, during the qualifying period, he came under a lot of criticism, including from myself. At that time it wasn’t looking good for him. Two points if a possible nine. He stuck through it. Kudos to all of them. A fantastic victory. Like I said, it’s hard to put it really into words what it means. We all saw what the 2006 done for the whole game. For the whole generation. There are young kids that have been watching this right now. They’ll be doing exactly the same for the next generation of young kids and for Australian football.
