Socceroos star Daniel Arzani will have an awkward discussion with his club Melbourne Victory after a photo surfaced of the forward playing for an amateur team in Sydney.
The 25-year-old was spotted playing for his junior club Coogee United last Saturday in a 3-2 loss to Alexandria Lokomotiv Cove in the sixth division.
A Victory spokeswoman said Arzani would be “spoken to by the club” to discuss his behaviour because players are expected to return for pre-season training this week.
The club would have been sweating after hearing about Arzani turning out for an amateur team given his longstanding history with injuries.
Arzani tore an ACL in his debut for Celtic, ruling him out of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
He has since worked himself back into the Socceroos set-up after once being the youngest Australian international – debuting at 19 against the Czech Republic.
He played in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and was recently a substitute in a 2-0 win against Bangladesh.
A source who watched Arzani play for Coogee said he looked like he was “taking the piss out [and] trying to nutmeg everyone” and it appeared he was wearing a beanie to hide his identity.
While the Eastern Suburbs Football Association are yet to reply to a request for comment, it is understood the organisation is investigating claims Arzani was unregistered.
It is against competition rules to play unregistered.
Arzani first made headlines as a teenage wonderkid playing for Sydney Boys High School and being part of Sydney FC’s academy.
He made the step up to the A-League not long after and played 24 times for Melbourne City.
Arzani then moved to that club’s parent club Manchester City and spent four years in Europe before returning to Australia to play for Macarthur FC and now Melbourne Victory.
